Fort Wilderness

Post by Peerless83 » Mar Thu 19, 2009 7:55 am

Does anyone else enjoy Fort Wilderness as much as I do? I usually go throw up a tent every year for my birthday..and I think it is one of the more enjoyable things to do in Disney. Nothing says roughing it like camping at Disney World!!! :)

My DW admitted to me the other day that she has been thinking about going camping somewhere. I couldn't think of a better spot. We'll probably try it locally first just to get the kinks worked out. I haven't camped since Boy Scout days many moons ago.

No, I have never camped at FW, but sure does sound like a lot of fun! I hope it works out for you to do it. Post how you liked it! I've heard Trails End is a great buffet to try out that way.

YES!!!

My family & I stayed there each year (mid 80's through '99) on our annual trip. My grandparents have an RV, and so we'd trek down to Florida from Ohio every Christmas break. We'd get to our site, park the camper, and never move it until it was time to go home two weeks later. So convenient...all the comforts of home at Disney World! We could go anywhere in "the World," just by standing at a bus stop at the end of our loop.

Prior to our run at FW, we'd stay off-property at a Campground down on Irlo Bronson Highway (right next to the Camping World superstore...in case we needed any supplies, LOL). It was always a PITA to unhook everything when we wanted to go into the parks or anywhere else on-property. Eventually - even though it was more expensive - we sucked it up and made our reservations for FW. Once we started there, we never went anywhere else.

Im originally from Ohio as well...moved to Fl about four years ago. Go Buckeyes!

Anyway, like I said..I think camping at ft. wilderness is such a great time. I do it for my bday in october..and the people decorate all of their rvs in halloween decorations..the weather is cooler...and trails end is probably one of the better priced buffetts..and the food isnt all that bad either....but I am a big big fan of hoop dee doo...

Ooh...Hoop Dee Doo is awesome! I actually put in a request a while back that someone upload some HDD audio to SSR. Maybe you could get a recording when you're there next?

When we would go at Xmastime, everyone always put out lights and stuff on their campers. I used to love going for a run around the loops and seeing all the decorations.

We did Micky's Backyard BBQ for Christmas dinner this last year and walked around the 'campground' after dinner. The decorations were great! People really went all out decorating and it was fun to see.

Gotta love Tink.

Viking, those pics are awesome!! Do they still give you the option to order a turkey dinner delivered to your door on Xmas Eve, or has that been replaced with the Backyard BBQ?

Do they still leave candy-filled stockings on the RV doors? Ooh...that was one of my absolute favorite things: coming back from a long day at the park to find that Santa Mickey had left something for me. :mickey:

Are there still the campfire singalongs and movie nights? Another favorite activity of mine. As you can see by my total hijack of this thread, I really miss my times at Fort Wilderness!

You're killing me Nicc! That all sounds GREAT! Unfortunately we didn't stay there, we were at Port Orleans. Just did the BBQ and a self guided walk-about. There were several sites (well, 2 maybe 3) that had the inflatable movie screens and projectors going watching movies. Disney movies of course.

Dr. Ravenscroft and I stayed there back in December 2006. Our site was directly next to one of the "rest" stations, and directly behind us was a bus stop. It was nice to basically roll out of bed, hop in the shower, and then right onto the bus.

though a bit expensive (what with park tickets and such), it's about the only place I'd camp (outisde of the back yard, that is)

So they *do* still do the campfire sing-a-longs & movies?!? That's so good to know!

A lot of the resorts are doing the sing-alongs and movies too. Yacht & Beach Club do it with S'mores out on the beach every night!
No one's gloomy or complaining while the flatware's entertaining.
