When CC started paring down nonperforming stores a few months ago I was shopping for a TV. I shopped a closing CC and Best Buy, Walmart, Sams, etc. I ended up buying one at Sears for $200 less than the same one I saw in CC. Also, if you buy something from one of these closing stores, if there is a problem, there is nowhere to send the product back to except the manufacturer.

for our Canadian audience members, you'll be happy to know (if you shop at Circuit City, that is), that the Canadian stores will not be closing. it's only the US stores.

also, if you're curious about the warranties on stuff bought at CC, they will still be good - including the extended warranties.

CC has updated their website, so you're not able to buy anything. They have, instead redirected everything to a FAQ-type page

well, the site does say that there are only about 3000 employees in Canada, as opposed to the 34000 losing their jobs here. it's possible... :P

Best Buy has been my store of choice for years. I have to admit I buy most of computer stuff from Zipzoomfly.com. Most of their stuff has free shipping and they stand by everything they sell. I build computers and never have had a trouble with them.

There was a report on CNN a couple of years ago about how CC was being slammed by BB and they were losing a great deal of market share. So it's really no surprise that it's come to this. Anyway BB seems to actually care about customer service. They have people in the store that help you get what you need. They don't get paid by commission, so it's not like all they're looking to do is up sell.

I am sorry to see so many people out of work though. :(

Anoter huge blow to the economy. Does anyone feel like Wal Mart is taking over the world? I know BB took away a market share, but I kind of feel that the big box marts have had a pretty large impact too.

My DW is from a very small town and once Wal Mart built a store near the highway (read State road) downtown died! I truly mean there are only a couple of banks, a couple of continence stores, one IGA, a liqueur store, and two fast food places. Before Wal Mart there had been an 8 block square of mom and pop shops. It's pretty much a dead zone and it's never coming back! Yea, I think Wal Mart might have something to do with it. ;+<

Honestly, most Wal-Marts do not have a large electronics section in relation to the rest of thier store. Large electronics are really not thier forte, and thier overall selection of DVDs and CDs leaves a good bit to be desired.

To be totally honest, Wal-mart is not filling the niche that CC is leaving... Best Buy is doing that.

I wasn't a huge patron of CC, I bought my last t.v. from there, but I don't buy electronics often. I'm sorry for those people that will be losing their jobs though.

I also try to stay away from Wal-Mart! They're like "Buy N Large" from Wall-E, they're trying to take over the world!!!

Everytime I would visit my local Circuit City, I always felt that the prices were always higher than best buy. Occaiously they would have some better sale prices at C.C. but I hated the service in the store every time I would walk in. Best Buy always had better customer service, at least in my area, and I would always feel satisfied after leaving Best Buy compared to Circuit City.

I am very sad though that a lot of people will be losing their jobs though :(

You are 100% right. the "older" version of Circuit City, before it became more like Best Buy, the people were working on commission, and they would bother you as soon as you came in. That turned me off to the store for many years.
Even when they turned it around and started making bigger stores with more stuff in them, the customer service was still much worse than what I got at other places, and I never ONCE found something there that was not cheaper elsewhere. No kidding on that.
I agree 100%. I always feel satisfied leaving BB, but not so much with CC. I always hate to see people lose jobs, but to CC itself, good riddance.

Yep, our Circuit City is going out of business and is posting 50% off sales all over town. I think I might head over there and see what I can still get this weekend. However it is very sad to see these businesses closing down.

ours has been 20-50% off for a couple of weeks now. Last time I was in there (about a week ago or so), they didn't have too much left...

This is no surprise, about two years ago there was a story in the Wall Street Journal about how CC was losing market share to BB. The story explained that their pricing was similar, but BB customer service was so much better.

My personal experience is that I know if I walk into a BB someone is going to greet me and ask if they can help me find what I need. I don't think I ever got that at CC. It's still sad to see so many people lose their jobs.

I was trying to figure out when the last time I was in a Circuit City and I can't even tell you what year it was. I have many friends that are the same way. I get all my stuff via Amazon Prime, Best Buy (in emergencies), Newegg, and even Costco. I guess this is one of the reasons CC is closing. Also might have something to do with their wacked out purchasing process. Apparently they don't actually purchase the item YOU are buying until you buy it, then they take your money a pay off the debt. Sounds like a bad business plan to me.
