Quite unfortunately (if you ask me anyway), it was still open in May. I haven't heard of it closing for good. Maybe it was in rehab when you were there, slylandro?DisBeamer wrote:It is? It's been a while since I looked too hard but I thought the signs were still up in October.slylandro wrote:But, They also scrapped some ride to modify them: sound dangerous is gone for example (it is for the best tho it was horibly rated) and I could name many ride that were destroyed.

Wow!! My mom went to WDW in 1973, so it's neat to see what it looked like around the time she first went.spodie wrote:http://www.jetsetenterprises.com/cruise ... Photos.htm
I don't know if you guys have seen this yet or not, but I just stumbled upon this site and thought it was really cool. These pictures were taken at WDW in 1974 and it shows pictures of the Polynesian Villiage, the Golf Resort, and the Contemporary, then pictures of the Magic Kingdom. Here's what was the most interesting to me:
- The sign that told you that you were in Disney World. It's kind of sad compared to today's signs.
- The decor of the room at the Polynesian Villiage and what the people were wearing in the parks.
- The pictures that were taken in the parks and particularly, Tomorrowland since most of it was under construction.
- I also noticed how open everything was in general - the resort areas, the parks, everything!
Isn't it cool?? What do you guys think?

it's still open according to all the current park maps as well as the official website. I have not heard any plans for closing it yet, they may have been doing some kind of refurb when you were there

I absolutely loved these old photos. I could stare at them all day, I love watching old videos and old pictures of the parks either from my personal collection or from someone elses to see how much the parks have really changed over the years.
I know this is probably your first flight...and it's mine too...ha, ha
Rain upon that planet Earth. And they rain ... and rain ... and rain. The deluge.

Looking at those pictures, it's amazing what wasn't open at the time. No Splash, no Big Thunder, no Space Mountain (actually, little or none of the current Tomorrowland), no Mickey's Toon Town Fair. Not to mention: no Epcot, no AK, no DHS.
Great pictures, but all it does is re-enforce the fact that I'm happy with WDW the way it is now.

Most of what you named didn't even open until 10+ years after these pictures were taken (with the exceptions of BTM and Space Mountain I think) I can remember being a kid when Splash Mountain and DHS (then MGM) first opened. DHS was so weird back then. No ToT and certainly no RnR or TSM. Just a lot of shows like Monster Soundstage, Superstar Televison, extended animation and backlot tours, the Indy show etc. I think the only *rides* were the Great Movie Ride, Star Tours, and the Backlot Tram if you consider that a "ride." Thinking back on that and realizing how sparse it was (it still kinda is) makes me wonder what being in the MK when these pics were taken was like!WVParkfan wrote:Looking at those pictures, it's amazing what wasn't open at the time. In a way, it's actually pretty nice, in that it's very easy to walk from anywhere on property to anywhere else.horizons1 wrote:Have you ever seen how the Lowes resorts at Universal are crammed in there?
If there were more monorails and fewer buses, this would be less of an issue for me at WDW. It sucks that no matter where you stay, there's no nice way to get to the Animal Kingdom.

I honestly thought it was a joke when I first saw it! I needed a picture of the current entrance sign for a project and I did a Google image search for it. The 1974 sign was actually one of the first images to pop up, and I thought it was funny and decided to investigate. And then it turned out that it wasn't a joke, but I still got a pretty good laugh out of the fashons and the decor.Guy wrote:I agree the sign saying that you are WDW is a little sad, you would have thought they would have had something a lot better.

It sure brings back memories.
Also, Mr. Toadwildrider, I don't think Star Tours was running at the opening of MGM. I think it was just Great Movie Ride and Backlot Studios Tour (which took FORever). There were also lots of shows.
The animation tour was much more interesting then, because they had people actually working on animation there and you walked by and watched them. You also got to see the cubicles and such. There weren't many people working at any given time (who could blame them, working in a virtual fishbowl?), but I remember thinking that would be the best job EVER. I bought an official "animation" pencil and pad of special paper--the ones they supposedly used there. Unfortunately, the pencil and paper did not make me a good animator.

Wow! Seeing those photos makes me appreciate WDW for what it is today. I didn't start going there until 2000 when I was 35 years old and married with 2 teenage boys. I didn't realize just how much of the park was still under construction when it was first opened!
Looking at the decor of the Poly and the clothing of the people just reminds me how bad the styles were back then - lots of avocado greens, harvest golds and ugly reds (and we thought it was cool!).
