It's not so much the animal-viewing is 'against the rules', they would just prefer people go into AK and pay for the privilege. There was a time when AKL first opened they were very strict about people coming and going on the WDW buses, and checking resort ids. Granted, even at that time the Key to the World was still standardized throughout the resort, so you couldn't really tell which resort the person was staying at from a casual glance. But they did check.
The pool hopping rule may be out of date, then. I know that -used- to be the rule but, as has been said, since it's impossible to enforce maybe they finally gave in and changed it. I have heard within the last year or so, though, of people being asked for resort id at the Wilderness Lodge pool. I guess 'enforcement' even for off-property visitors is very sporadic.

There are so many great ideas that you all have already listed that I too love to do. The Boardwalk is great to lounge around. It's also very romantic. Plus it's great to walk from the Boardwalk to the the Yaht and Beach Club and take a seat along the beaches. VERY ROMANTIC, especially at night.
Also love just taking that quiet long walk from DHS pass the Swan and Dolphin, all the way to the EPCOT bridge.
Downtown Disney, and Resort hopping are always a blast. We've heard these a lot. Anyone got anything else? This is a great topic!

The Yacht/Beach pool is not for anyone on Disney property. They read the code on the room key to make sure you are staying at the Yacht/Beach or Beach villas.
Another good freebie is the bus system. You can ride around WDW world all day!

speaking of the animal viewing, I believe they some time in the eveneings they have a viewing with night-vision goggles for free. not sure what time, where is is exactly, or if it's limited to AKL guests only, but I do remember people talking about that on these boards somewhere.

Or if you can't view the animals at AKL, there is always the native wildlife. Florida is full of it. Just stay away from the black "kitties" that smell kinda bad (it isn't really pretty).
They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

Pool hopping is not allowed. If you read the other boards they say that at YC/BC they check IDs and /or give out wrist bands in busy times.
The ruls have changed and DVC members can pool hop to other DVC resorts but not SAB.
There are locals that come in and park at some resorts to use their pools and Disney is trying to stop them as well.
My favorate freebee is resort hopping. Sit around the GF lobby. Also listen to the singer in the lobby at Poly at night.

While the thought of pool hopping could be the better part of a day's entertainment, (relaxation away from the Parks) if you look at the overall reasoning, it makes sense to not allow it. imagine you finally spend the hard earned money you have saved for over the years on a Deluxe Resort. you Head down to the pool to find it overrun with people. imagine if you paid for Consierge Level just to find out that they moved it to the lobby and anyone can enjoy the snacks for free. Disney should enhance the pool expierience at every resort, regardless of the category (ie...value, moderate, deluxe)

One of my favorites is sitting with my feet in the water at the Polynesian. I know you aren't supposed to swim, but no one has a problem with a little foot soak. Not only is it rejuvenating, you get to see all the excitement of each form of WDW transportation (other than buses).
Drop another coin in slot and I will tell you more.
