Let me ask you all this. As much as I don't like the hat either, I wonder, would it make a difference if the hat had something better inside of it? What if they had a better store, or like a small Disney Museum or something? Or in that case, what if somehow they worked it so the hat was the entrance to the Walt museum?
I'm wondering if it would make any difference?

they can keep the hat, but move it somewhere else. I really don't care WHAT (if ANYTHING) is in there, so long as it doesn't block the view of the Chinese Theater.
Personally, though, I would like them to just remove the hat and have the classic symbol again (Ear-ful tower). Either that, or something that at least has SOMETHING to do with the movies, as that's what the Studios were originally made for...

I agree whole heartily, It's not that it's a hat, it could be almost anything, It blocks the view of the theater. It was only gonna be there for a year, it needs to go and I can find a great big hand they place with it!!!!!!!!they can keep the hat, but move it somewhere else. What used to be one sweet looking area is now one big layer cake. First you have the wonderful theater replica. On top of that you now have a cool, yet horribly misplaced sorcerer hat. On top of that you often have a stage set up for whatever promotions may be going on at the time. If you want a good photo any of these, you're quite often out of luck.
Re: The Hat - MGM
Agree 100%! Why on earth would they put that giant hat in front of a beautiful reproduction of Chinese Theater? Makes no sense at all. I don't hate the hat, just where they put it. Maybe they could move the hat and that awful giant arm at EPCOT to the same place... anyplace but where both are currentlyG2-4T wrote:You know the one, Mickey's huge Sorcerer Hat that was dumped there for the last celebration. I can't be the only one out there that thinks it is a lousy addition to that area - it would fit better somewhere else, just not in the middle of Hollywood! They do a great job building the atmosphere and the visual aspects leading to the Chinese theater and then they put that in there and leave it. Ok, for the event it was fine but it's time is up - move it out to another part of the park.
So does anyone else think that this is out of place and if so where should they put it?

Ok... I know I'm brining up an old thread (and probably re-igniting a fuse), but I just thought of something.
So many people hate the hat (I don't know anyone that LOVES it), yet we still keep using it as the park icon. Granted, it's Disney's official park icon for the park now, but that doesn't mean we (the Disney fan community) have to aknowledge it as such.
Take the WDWCelebrations icon for example.

Part of the reason I think the wand came down was because so many people still used SSE without the wand. Eventually even Disney took the wand off the park map illustration long before the real thing came down.
There's nothing saying that we the fans have to use the hat as the icon. I'm sure if enough people rejected it and used the Earful Tower or the Chinese Theater, Disney would start to realize "the hat just isn't working". I think we are partly to blame for why the hat is still there. In Disney's eyes, we've alrady accepted it being there by using it ourselves.

According to my sister, a CM at GMR there are two reasons the hat stayed. And yes, it was meant to be temporary.
1. MGM did not have a recognizable park icon. The Earful tower is outside the park.
2. (This one is just rumor). Disney's contract to use the likeness of the theater expired and Grauman's was not willing to renew it. So, instead of redoing the entire facade of the building they just left the Big A** Ugly Hat.

They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

I thought that the Hat would just take some getting used to, but I've been to WDW at least 6 times since it went up and every time I think, "Wow, that Hat is so out of place." And the stupid pin shop underneath it makes it even worse (sorry, I just can't get on board with that whole pin trading thing). I think the biggest thing is of it's location. Anyone who sees it for the first time has to know that it was just kind of "put there" because you can see the top of the Chinese Theater peeking out at you as you walk up.
I think it's a good icon for the park, but in a HORRIBLE location.
