The odpt database seems to be spoty prior to about 2003.

The ODPT database is umm... incomplete, and inaccurate. My guess is the issue is two fold (if you look at all WDW pins sorted by oldest to newest between 1990 and 2002 they have about 40 pins.) First off I don't know that Disney kept specimens of all the pins (before they started pushing pin collecting.) And second the event services database was only created in 2002-3, they maybe going back filling in but I doubt that is as high a priority as going forward.

The domain odpt.com (which is the main one they seem to advertise.) was only created in 2002, 23rd of july to be exact.

As a cast member, there are rules to pin trading. The ones that have been mentioned do exist i.e. only trade with kids when wearing a green lanyard, or not trading the same pin that you have on your lanyard, but the one with the mickey back is not really a rule. I have traded authentic Disney pins without a mickey back before. A lot of the times people will buy the metal backs because they are more secure, and a lot of people dont want the mickey backs when you trade with them. Its really at the discression of the CM when trading. I will tell you that it is very annoying when someone makes a trade with you when your busy and when do you have a chance to look down they traded a nondisney / cheap pin that your stuck with. Iks me to no end. Try and catch us when we are vunerable!! ha

But I can tell you we have probably every single pin ever made. We get pictures of the new ones coming out and there are just tons of them floating around, so always keep an eye out for the ones you really want!

Ummm, I keep a stock of cheap pins just to trade with CMs. We buy pins off Disney Shopping.Com when they have pins for like $2-3 per.

My kids like the pin trading so I actually buy a bunch on ebay and it averages out to like $3 a pin and then we use those pins to trade. I have never had a cast member not trade a pin because it was not official. And we have lost backings before so I purchased alot of backing from WDW. So I have some with Mickey's hand, Goofys Hat, and the Sorcers Cap along with the Mickey heads.

The non-disney pins, requires the CM to recognize and then care.

But Disney wants to promote THIER pins, not pins that 3rd parties made (most likely infringing on there IP.) Because it's a way to SELL pins. Since one of the trade rules is 1 for 1 (which makes it pin exchange.)

I have purchased pins as well as traded them on my previous trips. I can remember, I think it was 2001, when checking into the All-Star Resort, I received two pins (Mickey and Pluto in a car) to encourage trading.

I usually carry a couple of pins on me and whenever I pass a CM, I look to see if they have a lanyard. It's always nice when you find a unique pin on their lanyard and trade for it.

I was aware of the rules (1 for 1, ask to look but respectfully do not touch a cast members pins until they hand it to you in the trade, green lanyards are for children only, and the such).

As for trading with another guest, Disney frowns upon it b/c one of the purposes of pin trading was to create an interaction between CMs and guests. And I do agree with the unwritten policy. There are some serious collectors out there who show their wares at times, but remember this is a theme park, not a pin trading convention. Keep it fun for everyone.

Wow! I never knew that the whole pin trading business had some many intricacies and other rules. It's something that I have never done but could imagine myself being obssessed with (especially considering my OC tendencies and easy by which I become addicted to all things Disney)!

Down here in south Florida they would have pin trading nights at the Disney outlet store" Character Premier", but Disney jsut decided to liquidate it's pins up at the parks, so no more pin nights. We would get pins for only $1.99, and then you can trade crappy pins for really good ones. Hopefully Disney will do this again down here. I knowI will miss them.
