Well it depends on what you are trying to be efficient with time or transport.
I'm not 100% sure which you are talking about, the containerized rooms or the rooms in the CR. The Containerized rooms/buildings are often used for things like disaster relief. You can have a tarp or a studio apartment with running water and HVAC, which would you like?
In either case building buildings takes time, you can trade off the efficient in transport for speed. When you are doing the trick like the did for the CR, you try to rent a warehouse near-by. As I recall for WDW they where built property but off the building site.

I see what you're saying and I totally agree that it would work great in a disaster situation. I'm not an expert, but I guess I just don't see how it would be the most economical/most efficient way of doing things seeing as how Disney had more time and ample space (2 things that disaster areas lack).
I'm not trying to argue as much as I was just wondering, so sorry if I'm coming off like that.

I have always heard that all the rooms do pull out. whether they were ever pulled out again for refurb or did they just decide it would be cheaper to refurb the rooms without taking them out again I don't know. I've always heard that one of the reasons the hotel was built the way it was is 'cause WDW was opening and suddenly they realized that they didn't have enough places for people to stay. So a quick, cheap, yet impressive and inovative, for its time, resort was built. I think its cool, even if time has passed it up. Some reasons a person might want to stay there are for the view, and for the convience of being on the monorail line. Anyway those are a couple reasons I would stay there. I love the fact that the monorail goes through the building.

They had space, they did NOT have time. When you are building a park from a swamp there is a lot of work to do. Remember Walt died, and for about 2 years the Florida project was on hold (I've heard there was discussion of selling the land.) When, I believe Roy, pushed for the project to continue without Walt. The land had sat idle costing the company money (mostly taxes).
So they wanted to jumpstart the park and get it producing money instead of costing money. They knew they had to have hotels AND the park. WDW was incredibly remote when MK was the only thing there. You would pull off I-4, and drive on an elevated roadway for several miles, till you got to the parking lots.

I fell for the Contemporary when I first saw it in 1972 on my first visit. I didn't stay there until 1975 and have stayed there 5 of my 14 trips since. It has an energy about it, like a facinating city, and of course the monorail adds a specialness to it, in a lot of ways, for instance take an elevator down from you room and get on it, or watch it go by while you eat or walk around. It would be fairly ordinary without the monorail, but with it, everything in it feels special and the view from your balcony is one that will keep you up at night, you just don't want to go to sleep. Already I've said too much and yet could say much more. The other resorts, (and I've stayed at many) are great, but the Contemporary is one easy to fall "in love" with.

That was very cool, thanks for posting this. I vaguely recall seeing that before about how the rooms were assembled...but how about those room furnishings? Wow, I'm glad it's not the 70's anymore!
