Hmm...just found this:

[quote]MoviesOnline: Why the choice to use Fred Willard?

ANDREW STANTON: Well he’s the most friendly and insincere car salesman I could think of. It’s funny, I thought it would be a little more obvious and I hope I succeeded in it in the sense that once I chose an old movie for WALL-E to watch, that I knew would be showing footage of real human beings, I said “Well, that sets a precedent. That means anytime you look at old footage, it should be real human beings.â€

It's the only Pixar, Disney movie I've been somewhat excited about in years. I hope its good, really good. What do you all think, you all have different views. See it at the movies or wait 'till it hits DVD or later?

See it at the theater. If you're real concerned, hit a matinee.
It's good. Any Pixar filmed I've missed seeing in the theater I've been upset about. The big screen allows you to appreciate their level of detail very well.

Asking this crowd is sort like asking us if you should go to Disneyland if you're in Anaheim, but specifically I think Wall-E is pretty epic and worth seeing on the big screen.

And, in fairness, it's not like he would tell the world "Oh, we decided to take the easy/cheap way out".

Anyway, now that you mention I didn't notice the real humans when he was Googling either. Adding that into the mix, I think he's right that it only makes sense to use "real" footage of Fred to make it consistently "historical".

Well, yeah, he makes Pixar movies, he's not an Imagineer! ;)

I absolutely LOVE Wall-E. That movie was sending us an important message.

I thought it was great (loved that they brought back the shorts). I may be going back to see it again this weekend...

I finally went to see Wall-E and loved it! What a fantastic film. Not only were the characters charming, but the message was great. The imagery was phenomenal, I'm definitely going to see it on the big screen again when it hits the cheap theaters.

Cap'n Schnemo, I can't believe they actually gave you a watch without replaceable batteries at the film. That is ironic to say the least. Hope those you wrote or called get the message.
Drop another coin in slot and I will tell you more.

I wanted to see it since the first preview because it looked cute (and because it was Disney), but I never thought that I would actually get so wrapped up in a love story between two robots. I also never thought that a robot could be that cute. How do they DO that?!

Have not seen it yet.

Thought about waiting for the cheep theater to go, or DVD.

I've heard more good than bad reviews on it.

AMAZING movie. I LOVED it. Out of all the movies I've ever seen, it was definitely the most recent.

Got you.
And I was going to say about the live actor choice, that I thought it was amusing that the old footage used live actors, while the new stuff is computer generated. I definitely was amused by that, even though, I admit too, I never would have noticed that Hello, Dolly was live action as well.
I'm also slightly reminded of a song from - get this - a dance game. It's titled ROM-eo & Juli8, and it's, yes, two robots falling in love. I now think of Wall-E every time I play that.

I also like how they blended the computer generated stuff with the live action snippets. Though, I'm still not so sure about Fred Willard being in it (never liked him much for some reason. he's up there with Chris Rock and Gilbert Godfried as far as annoying voices). the rest of it though, was great.

I have some more to say about the movie, but I'll white it out for possible spoilers (highlight below to read):

one thing they didn't explain was how the population of the ship was maintained for as long as it was (supplies on ship, the babies in the nursery when people didn't have physical relations, etc). it would also be interesting to see what became of the people after the Return (besides what was in the end credits, that is).

js3901, for the last part of your question. That is for Disney's newest enterprise, the straight to DVD sequel.

yeah, I was afraid of that. but, now that Pixar is on board, maybe the direct to DVD won't be a BAD thing (at least as bad as it has been in the past...)
