It is true, I would never have guessed it without the clue from JWG. So I will graciously concede this win to him/her(?) and let him/her(?) post the next picture.

It's the Lawnmower Tree. That piece of metal is actually a part of a lawnmower.
At some point in the last 1-2 years the tree has been cut down at about the 12 foot mark. So, obviously it is dead and this is a limited time "wonder" to see.

That's really too bad and I'd love to know what the "real" story to this is. I find it hard to believe someone just leaned their lawnmower against a tree and that it was forgotten for so many years that before anyone found it the tree had grown around it. Maybe, but odd don't you think?

I haven't been able to find a nice spread of "pics over the years" to show how the lawnmower was slowly disappearing as the tree grew, which would be fun to see.

well I know you see metal fences with trees going into and around the fences. On the UF campus there use to be one, eventually they took the fence down and had to cut the fence at the tree, so for years there was a tree with a section of fence in it. it looked odd.

But it could be real, an abandoned mower left for years in some forgotten corner of the park. I would suspect it happened BEFORE Disney bought the property. Since Ft Wilderness has been open for so long.

UPDATE: it seems that all ears agrees with me.

Perhaps Disney killed the tree in order to halt the disappearance of the lawnmower. There is little of it showing now, and in a couple of years it would have been gone altogether. If they keep the insects out of it, it will be around for years to come.

Wow, this is pretty wild, is this easily found on the fort wilderness grounds? Would love to see it before it's gone on the next trip.

That's tough, can't enlarge the picture (not a bad ploy!) to get a better look.
I'm trying to see what the Iron forms as far as a picture, but hard to see on the brick. I'd assume that would help identify it's location.
