i love main street i believe that main street was put there by disney for a reason, the reason is so that people can come into a place where america was at the time the nicest and where everything was just calm. 8-)

Possibly one of the best areas in any park. I love the shops and the candy store absolutely freakin' rocks! I remember being a kid and my parents buying a lb of the fudge for the family as an after park treat before we went to bed. No wonder I could never fall asleep!!! :mickey:

I love Main Street, my favorite thing to watch is in Main Street and that is the Trolley Song people who welcome you to Main Street and rest of the Magic Kingdom with some great classic songs. The music and athmosphere and view of the Castle is just amazing. I also like it when it's decorated for Halloween/Christmas.

Lots of Raves for the Main Street....true the atmosphere is still there...but what about the shops? (Candy shop was mentioned as awesome) But how does everyone feel about the mall atmosphere the left hand side has become? (on hot days i love it...i make it through downtown in Air Conditioning!)

Yeah, I am not really keen on this area. I agree, it is nice to be able to walk through the whole side to avoid weather or crowds. And the Emporium serves its purpose well. But, that's about it. The rest of it is lame.

I echo what a lot of folks have already said. Main Street, USA, is the single best application of atmosphere in disney. However, way back in the day when there was an actual arcade with 1 and 5 cent flip movie machines and the Magic Shop and the Theater that played old movies, it was a much better "Land". Right now, I feel that it is just a great entry into the "real" Magic Kingdom. It is more of an extension of the tunnels under the train station that it is a place to linger. That being said, I do usually arrange to get my hair cut at the barber shop, and that remains as great as it used to be!

I echo those that miss the old shops. I still have somewhere one of those fake ice cubes with a fly in it that I bought in the Magic Shop in the late 70s. And I always loved ducking into the air conditioned theater to catch a few minutes of Steamboat Willie, etc.

i believe i can speak for the past few posts in that while the atmosphere is awesome and not taking anything away from what is...but back when it was more unique it was more awesome!

Even though Main Street has become like a strip mall, I still enjoy it. It's has just become a place to linger on the way out at closing. You know, when you know the day is almost over and you really don't want to leave yet.
It kinda sad, my parents took me to WDW when I was 15 (1975) and there was stuff to do there. Now it's become just one more place for Disney to milk you out of that last Dollar still in your pocket.
I say bring back the arcade! Then again, on second thought, I guess it's always' been a strip mall!

Jacca5660 - You're right, it has always been a strip mall, but even strip malls were better before they were all the Gap and Pottery Barn etc. No matter where you are in the country almost all the stores are the same. Though you are right, it still is a great place to linger before you have to leave the park!

Croaker - do you have a license to pun like that?

It's the entrance the begining to a magical day.
It's Walt's storybook take the Keys To the Kingdom Tour to find the messages in all the 2nd floor windows. It's what Walt wanted the turn of the "last" century hometown USA I love it.
