I think there are a few options.

One is to announce that we would like everyone to adhere to an honor system, where they limit the amount of requests to a respectable amount. We could debate that amount.

This honor system could be on that is enforced if neccessary. TI could monitoring the streams, and breaking up large chunks of requests. I could certainly do this during working hours EST, when we seem to have the most issues with playlist domination.

If the honor system does not work....we could discourage members from hogging the stream with multi requests by scaling the points as they make multiple requests.

For example: if your first request is Walt Disney World - EPCOT - entrance loop 2001 - 1144 points
Then your second request of Walt Disney World - epcot - epcot 25th entrance loop - 3655 points would now cost - 7310 points, or double the amount of points.

Now you are saying sure.. i'll just request long tracks at the beginning and then request smaller and smaller tracks... muuhhaaaa

First shame on you! And I realize you can do that so the request points would be sorted so as you request a track, the higher point values is scaled up. HA

This would not interfere with the new user or a seasoned member of the site. Individuals with more points would be allowed to request multiple tracks, while new users still could make request, just not grouped together.

We may want to monitor the streams to see who and when these multi-requests jam up the playlist. We may just need to target a few individuals, during certain times.

I know personally I have a large amount of points, but rarely make requests in blocks. If I do its during an off time when there are no requests in the queue. I try to be respectful of others and not make it the rdeacon playlist. :)

I don't see the problem with enacting a 70 minute limit. If people are so considerate like they say they are, then nobody should ever reach the limit ;)

I'm in this camp, so to speak.

I don't think it needs changing, just maybe the users that request multiple hours of tracks in a time need reminding that they're not the only people here and should be considerate to other users who will want to request stuff and have it played sometime soon.

At the end of the day though, it's subsonic's site and he'll do with it what he will. It won't change how I enjoy the site, but I just don't see as there's a real need to change it.

That's what I'm planning, 70 minutes, I just didn't want to confuse people more. :)

When I posted this poll yesterday, the results were very in favor of doing it.. now it's a closer battle. ACP suggested in the chat to just "ask" veterans not to hog the stream. I can see if this works.

Whatever my decision, I'm not making one now. I still want more feedback and will wait a few more days to see where this poll leads.

WOW!!!! A lot being said, and a lot of good ideas, figures this thread had to start yesterday after I logged off and I just had to read 3 pages of posts  .

I have to say lets try the honor system for a bit and if that doesn't work THEN we start in of some sort of limiting action. I think that this thread should be a wake up call to anyone who requests hours worth of music (blockers). Personally I do get upset when I see blockers doing their thing but I have to say a lot of the songs they seem to request are in my treasure bin, this is a major reason why I don't request much, so the music being played is still good to me.

Now I do have to say right now if I where to request something it would be showing up on the player in about a half hour, but yesterday it would have shown up at 4:00pm (some 4 1/2 hours from now), so maybe the honor system is working for now. I do notice that there are a few user's that have multiple requests but I attribute that to some folks not seeing this thread. Maybe we need to have this as an Announcement or in the News section to have it front and center so all users know the deal.

OK... I have read everyone's points. Combined it with what I saw in the chat yesterday and lastly slept on it.

I agree with everyone, to a degree. Sounds like a mixture of approaches will be best.

1) ask the abusers to be mindful of 'hogging'
2) if they feel the need to span the time zones, at least mix it up a bit (not 4 hours of resort TV or Pal Mickey)
3) if we all just can't get along, make it difficult or impossible as rdeacon and fcod have suggested.

Again, all about self-governance until we fail.

As someone who doesn't request every day (lately hardly at all) but does a couple hours at a time when I do, I'd love to see this issue resolved by the community and not by technology. I would gladly adhere to an honor system were one devised.

I'm wondering if some people never even thought of this as being an issue and just the fact that it has now been brought up will make people stop and think before they request hours at a time.

disneylandmom, I am sure if the 3-5 people who do it knew, they would be more 'respectful' [if that's the right word].

I for one like the tracks one of the "abusers" always requests!!! :)

I forget who said it when I first joined, but the general feeling went like this: there are so many songs I have marked as a favorite that even if I'm not doing the requesting, chances are I am still listening to something that is a favorite... even if I didn't choose it this time around.

So what I guess I'm saying is this: so what if there are a lot of requests in there? Are you actually not hearing something you enjoy regardless?

I understand this feeling very well since I have so many songs in my treasures I always see yellow in the now playing queue.

But we have to think of the users that want to listen to a specific track. Not everyone that comes to the site likes as many of the songs as say I do or you or any of the "blockers". I still remember on several occasions every song a blocker selected was in my treasured section, I didn't mind......but what about those users that wanted to hear, for example, The boo to you parade - pirates? they could request it but since the time is blocked for 80 something minutes they would miss it when it is able to play.

Just some thoughts.

A. Make longer songs more points than what they are now. This may not solve the blocking problem.

B. Make longer songs longer to request.

C. Put a topper on points that you can get.

D. Make your turnover on your points longer.

Honestly, how OFTEN is this an issue though? Maybe nancynohorse and I are just more laid back about things, but if there are other songs there and I can't pick out a particular track I wanna hear, "no biggie" ya know?

If running up 70 minutes in a row is considered rude, then why not just automatically prevent that from happening? Anything that happens automatically by the system and not by manual moderator intervention also keeps potential squabbling to a minimum.

You could make an exception for an empty queue. The practical result might be that a hog could select 70 minutes, then have to wait out at least one track (either random or from another requester), then select another 70 minutes.

I suppose you could also allow hogs to make as many requests as they want at once, but past the 70 minute threshold, other users' music will get mixed into the queue. Maybe the hog's extra requests remain invisible until everyone else gets a chance, and if no one steps in then the hog gets to go another round. That might be too confusing for everyone, or create ninja hogs, which are always a nuisance.

haha I like this... it's the Disney thing to do

seriously though, as many times as it took me to read rdeacon's idea to understand it... I think it would work
