New Star Tours ?

Post by cap396 » Jan Wed 30, 2008 6:48 am

I saw this post on the Cranium Command thread:
I heard a Disney rumor that they were using the Body Wars simulator to test the new Star Tours movements.
Anyone have info on a new Star Tours? It does seem a little dated (it's been over 20 years since it opened at DLR), but it is still one of my favorite attractions.

This is a discussion that's been going on and on and on for a while now. I did read something the other day actually where an Imagineer said they were working with Lucas on something for Star Tours, but they didn't have any ideas as to a timescale (or they weren't saying).

Yes, Star Tours is dated, but it's fun. And I still think the version in Paris has more violent movements than the one at WDW... Could have just been me imagining it, but meh.

Andy. Has been in the Star Tours area after park closing at WDW, with the music turned off, but the ewoks still chattering away. Was quite spooky!

Ugh! I've only made it on Star Tours once (and even took Dramamine first), but don't think I'll ever be able to go again. And to hear that the one in Paris is more violent... well, I'll make sure that if I'm ever in DL Paris, I won't ride Star Tours!

I LOVE Star Tours and would like to see it upgraded. It's exciting to think any upgrade might involve Lucas' input.

i would like to see them split up star tours into two different rides. One the original and the other a new prequel version, then you can choose your tour!

They could be considered two different "destinations".

Endor Moon
something from the first few movies... Names evade me at the moment.

That would be awesome, to be able to choose your Star Wars destination!

Endor Moon - we all know about this one
Hoth - 'accidentally' fly through Imp blockade and into the midst of AT-AT Walkers
Alderaan - 'accidentally' fly through remains of Alderaan and get attacked by a space slug on the side

My head is just swimming with ideas - what a great suggestion!

That is a great idea! Even if only one of the gates has the original show, it still would allow the nostalgia of the original but also get something a new. Hopefully the imagineers have thought of that!

Well, IF I were an Imagineer, and I wished I was, I woudl be watching forums like this one!! I have been in customer service all of my life and I know the value of your customers opinions and the resulting $$$$. You can do whatever YOU want but if it's not what your customers want, you are out of the game.

Well I always thought they should do the multiple destinations especially when they show all these destinations that Star Tours 'visits' in the pre show. (Hoth, Tattoine). So maybe they would consider it when they make a new video but I'm sure it'll have to do with the newer movies and less the older movies. What would be great if they could somehow keep 1/2 the tours for the older movies (episodes 4-6) and 1/2 the tours(1-3) for the newer movies like everyone is saying but still change the video but just base the tours specfic to those movies.

I hope that makes sense.
I know this is probably your first flight...and it's mine too...ha, ha

I am all for the multiple destinations thing. In fact, it'll be quite cool to fly through the clouds above Bespin or experience part of the bombardment on Hoth. My only concern about a refurbishment is changing it completely to fit in with the Prequels. I'm one of those people disappointed with the new films and would really love to keep some aspect of the originals in the ride.

I think you guys are onto something. I'm thinking if they can make the TOT a random ride, they could do the same thing for Star Tours. Granted it's quite a bit more difficult to do but still. Imagine, there could be like four different trips, "You'll never experience the same ride twice... ha ha ha.." or what ever laugh a droid could make.

I'm thinking the original to Endor, or a flight across Hoth in the middle of an Imperial attack and you have to fly through ice caves, avoid Snow Monsters etc... Through Bespin City and through a small arial fight in the cloud covered sunset.... through the city of the prequel with all the floating "cars" etc... and then I'm not sure about the last one.

People have been talking about this kind of thing ever since Star Tours opened. It would certainly fit in with the queue area, and would both breathe some new life into the attraction and simultaneously preserve what people have grown attached to. It's one of the only serious benefits I see to these "shaky box with a TV screen" attractions.

I obviously don't understand all the technological issues, but I can't think of a reason why it would be difficult. If the cars can do one set of motions, they should easily be able to do more. Maybe data storage was a problem back when it was created, but an iPod should have more than enough space to store the visuals and the motion data at this point.

Maybe it's just an issue of dealing with Lucasfilm.
