Toy Story movies being remade in 3D

Post by DisBeamer » Jan Sat 26, 2008 3:29 am

The first two Toy Story movies are to be remade in 3D ahead of the release of Toy Story 3 in June 2010, film studio Disney-Pixar has announced.

Original director John Lasseter is to oversee the conversion, and promised audiences would be "blown away".

Toy Story was released in 1995 and features the voices of Tom Hanks and Tim Allen as toys that come to life.

The new version of the first film will be released in October 2009, followed by Toy Story 2 in February 2010.

Link to the full story.

This seems like kind of a strange thing to do to me, instead of making new films. I know - or at least have heard, and it's been discussed here - that Lasseter's not keen on sequels of older films (of the direct-to-DVD type). I wonder if he has a little different opinion about stuff he was directly involved in, in terms of milking it for all it's worth (or revisiting it, in more artistic terms)? Or he just thinks 3D is super terrific neato. I guess it's probably not -that- hard to do it, if they already have the skins/bases saved somewhere, just to apply it to the new tech. It worked well enough with Nightmare Before Christmas. And it's probably a guaranteed money-maker (also like Nightmare).

In any case, seeing the movies in 3D could be pretty cool, if it pans out. I wonder if the third will be released only in 3D, or in both (a la Meet the Robinsons).

I'm sure they're trying to tie it in with Toy Story Mania opening up at both WDW and DL this summer.

I think that'd be neat to see. Wonder if it will be in IMAX?

that'd be cool if it was in IMAX 3D.

This is super exciting! I can't wait to see all three on the big screen. I know they're making the 3rd in 3D as well. It would be a blast if they were IMAX, even though there isn't a screen too near my house.
Drop another coin in slot and I will tell you more.

with the 3rd being released so long after the first 2, I can see why re-releasing them would make sense. I know I can't wait to see it on the big screen again!

This will be great. It is awesome to see the 3D movie platform starting to take off. I just don't like how they charge you every time for those glasses even if you have old pairs.

I would love to see a "trilogy" played at the local IMAX (ala Star Wars). All three in succession, with "intermissions" between each!

This is so cool. I really like the first movie and I think seeing it 3d would be cool. I haven't been able to watch it because I have a younger nephew who watched it a lot. This will make it so I can watch it again.

To answer the original question. Yes John Lasseter thinks the current 3-D process is super nifty keen. He has said several times (or at least one which has been repeated multiple times) that he is ONLY going to make 3-D digital films from here on out.

With that said, I have to say Meet the Robinson's was very very well done. Unlike the 3-D part of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which was only about 10-15 minutes of the film and it was horrible. If you didn't catch MtR in the 3-D Digital (and I know a lot of people didn't since it was only showing in like 100 theaters equipped for it) if they rerelease it I would suggest you go see it.
