I love all the history in the great movie ride. I like seeing bogey and the gangster scence. The problem is that once you have seen both variations it is just sleepy. And god help you if the cast member isn't enthusiastic or willing to be silly.

I love the footage at the end of the ride but have always chuckled at some of the "classics" in the reel.

They should put in a Mission Impossible scene!!!

Amen to that! The cast member to me can really make or break the ride. Another thing I would do is ensure the cast members always stay enthusiastic. I know that's hard to do after you do it a hundred times a day but... IT'S YOUR JOB PEOPLE!

I used to work on GMR and can definitely speak for it's dated-ness. The worst section in my opinion is still the 'horror classics' section between Tarzan and Indiana Jones. If you don't know where I'm talking about, I'm not surprised. It's a bunch of cheap looking skeletons raising their arms up. I always thought they should steal a little space from Tarzan and do an inexpensive animatronic of Bela Lugosi with the cape or something like that, standing at the top of the stairs.

That and totally redo the end movie.

I don't completely understand why a couple people have mentioned this.

I know the original movie was designed in the 80s (and then later modified to add some more Disney stuff), but the vast majority of the films are classics (as they should be).

Do people just want a new edit with new transitions and music? Or is the lack of new films that people are objecting to?

Frankly, I thought this was one of the best parts of the ride.

I agree. I think the end movie is fine the way it is. Maybe extend it a little longer to add a few newer movies into the mix (movies within the ast 10 years or so). But, as it is, it's a great homage to the classics as is the ride itself. While the ride could to with a few updates, the movie is fine...

They actually do this already (at least periodically). When we rode in December, they had a brief clip from the first PotC movie. There were a few other new(ish) ones as well, though I can't think of any off the top of my head. I think they just tend to leave the original clips and make them shorter to add in new ones, rather than taking clips out, similar to the way they update the film in the American Adventure.

the pirates clip (Jack Sparrow holding a gun and smiling over his shoulder) was in there last year (December 2006) as well. that seemed to be the most recent movie in the montage. all the rest were early 90s and back, if I recall. nothing really in there from late 90s to today.

I could be wrong about that, though. I haven't rdden it in over a year now, and won;t be on it again for almost another year (at least). we'll see though...

A brief poll of the people I rode with suggest that Chronicles of Narnia is in there now too, which I seem to recall (as well as the coats they have in the queue line now). Another new(ish) one was Chicago; brief shot of Roxy and Velma dancing. The other 'newer' one I was remembering is Shakespeare in Love, which isn't really new so much as it's new since the ride first opened. There's a Jackie Chan movie in there too, but no one I asked could place what it was.

There are definitely other great films (or at least really good films) they could have in place of some of the clips. I could see LotR bumping Sister Act finally... I wish something would.

I remember the coats in the queue, but don;t remember the clip in the movie (for Narnia). I vaguely remember the Chicago clip. I'd have to confer with a few people about the Jacie Chan portion.

LOTR would be a good pick for addition. I could also see Harry Potter being in there (though there will shortly be an entire land based on that franchise at a competitor across town). not sure about copyright issues and whatnot, but what about movies like Transformers, The Da Vinci Code, The Matrix trilogy, Bruce Almighty, Ghost Rider, Spider-Man trilogy, Kung Fu Hustle, anything Muppets, or (more?) Pixar?

I'm not sure about the date of the refub., but I remember going there just after GMR re-opened with the new video footage. All they really did was replace similar clips with more modern stuff. (IE: Lion King was replaced with Finding Nemo clip) I'm not sure what clips Piartes and Narnia replaced though. It's not exactly the same process they used to edit the AA montage. It probably wouldn't have worked as well on GMR because that film relies more on the music to carry the movie anyway.

Oh, that's a good point; I hadn't thought about the music component. There's a list on wikipedia (taken with a grain of salt) of which ones have been swapped out, but I can't remember missing any of them well enough to know if it's right or not. Link. It does identify the Jackie Chan flick as Shanghai Knights though, and that sounds right so at least one mystery is solved.

I would love to see some new movies installed, especially now that the park is no longer obligated to limit itself to MGM productions! (Or at least I think that's probably the case! LOL!!!)

BUT -- I do love it the way it is. My only beef is that the cast members we have had in our cars the last couple of years have been so tired, delivering the lines in a monotone and without any energy. It's almost like they are reading the script for the first time as they drive.

When we first started going on the ride many years ago, the CMs were so enthusiastic and really way into their roles. It made the ride so much more exciting, especially for the kids.

I have noticed that Kilimanjaro Safaris is also like that -- you can get a great actor as your driver, and the ride is so much more exciting than if you get someone who is not really into it.

I think that some scenes from National Treasures would be good. Plus update some of the other scenes(i.e. Tarzan,Alien, and the montage at the end). Sometimes the people in the car can't see Tarzan or the Alien! The montage goes by so fast that one can't enjoy the clips at the end. Casablanca also needs updating or should be taken out. TGMR needs a good mix of old and new.

I just started taking a film appreciation class (and wouldn't you know the first movie we're going to analyze is The Searchers). Maybe by the end of the class I'll have more to contribute about updating the GMR rather than my original post of ideas, which was sort of like a candle burning out

Considering it's the Great Movie Ride, it's tough to make the case for removing stuff like Casablanca and adding things that are new, but not great. Universal Studios is regularly updated with attractions that are newer, but based on films that no one will even remember in 10 years.

Chesire, after this class, I predict that that montage at the end of the GMR will suddenly be a lot more impressive for you!

There are some real gems in there that most people hardly notice. (All hail the great Cagney grapefruit scene.)
