There are 3 (or maybe 2.5 versions). The original one play 3 games, the next version play 6 games and has a "Happiest celebration on earth" Pin in his hand. There is version 2.5 which has a few updates in it without the Pin in his hand but has the 6 games.

Each release they update him with a some more things to say.

You can pick up a "used" pal mickey on e-bay for about 10-30% off. People buy them at DW and bring them home and they end up on e-bay. Get one that comes in the Sorcerer Mickey outfit. That is the newest one with all the Games, and any of the other updates.

Nope the HW profiles changed between Version 1 and 2.

And it doesn't seem he will update his sayings. My guess is they have limited time to send him updates when you walk into the park and they don't want to clog the bandwidth with digital recordings.

I heard somewhere you can take them into the shop on Main Street and they can update them using an IR transmitter in a drawer, but I don't know if it's true or not.

It all works with IR, though. Try covering his nose up - he won't work, then!

IR is very very very low band width. They use the IR only for positional information, ie knowing what attraction you are walking into. Most of his data come wireless.

It is true they could update them for a while, but this was a version 1.0 thing. They haven't done this for quite some time.

The place on main street that has all the information on them is the Cinema, the place with the VMK shop in it.

how in the heck would you understand "Pal Donald"!!! :)

I can see him screaming about something and then suddenly jumping up and down with arms and legs flailing.... (picture everyone running away until he's done)

I was looking at a Pal Mickey this weekend at World of Disney. The first time I pressed his hand to activate him he did his "Hi, I'm Mickey... " thing. But then next time I did that he said he thought Captain Hook might be outside of Pirates. Well, since I was in Downtown Disney, that wasn't very relevant :-). Someone that has one of these things... how relevant do his remarks seem to be?

I was pleasantly surprised at how clearly I could hear him even with all the noise in the store. Of course, with that high pitched Mickey Mouse voice, that's good for cutting through crowd noise.

They are very relevent but when they are in the box, they are in a "demo" mode and will say almost anything.

I've seen it. The article is about 4 years old so a lot of the details are no longer correct.

As for upgrades, I'm sure you could upgrade the hardware, but I'm not sure where you'd get the hardware to do the upgrade. I mean you could "body" swap a new one with an old body.

That makes a lot of sense. Sounds like a fun thing but I'm not sure if it's worth the price. Guess if I had a younger kid, I'd be tempted.

I vote for pal Goofy as well.
Had my picture taken with him a couple of weeks ago. Man, is he TALL or what?
I'm a seven year old at the parks!!
Me, too. I'm 56 at home and 7 in the parks. My kids think I'm nuts, and my grandkids think I'm great.
