Zoo Atlanta has a couple of Pandas and it's attendance is way up. I also believe their Pandas breed. I think it's hard to breed them, but lets face it, if Disney wanted to, they'd get the peolpe with the know how. Also so, you rent the Pandas from China, it's over a Million a year. Disney cam afford it.DisBeamer wrote:Does Disney have a policy about only having animals that were bred in captivity? I thought I heard that once but I can't remember now. That'd make pandas hard to get since I believe they don't breed well in captivity. It'd be a good addition, though, and it'd fit right in with what they already have going in Asia.
I'd really, really like to see them work on the Beastly Kingdom, though. That has a lot of 'meat' for them to work with and I think they could do some really cool things (especially with all the opportunities to work in AA there - dragons, unicorns, sea serpents, etc). I hold out hope the dragon in the logo will one day come to pass.

Actually, I live in Atlanta so I've seen all the "COME SEE OUR PANDAS" advertising nonstop for months.Jacca5660 wrote: Zoo Atlanta has a couple of Pandas and it's attendance is way up. I agree with AKLRULZ too - that penguin exhibit is spectacular.
The problem with a night time show is the park has to close early due to the animals feeding schedule. At dark all of the animals have to be put away. I have been to an after hours party where the conference that I was with rented out the park. They opened Everest and the attractions that don't have animals. Howver having people pay to go to an animal park with no animals would kinda miss the point.rdeacon wrote:Ak has increased in popularity the last few years and its attendance numbers are up. AK needed to add Everest and the Beastly Kingdom would be good cool. AK suffered because when it first opened it was not a "complete" park. You could wizz thru and get the park done in 1/2 day. They are taking steps to fix that. I think they need a night time show. That would be a nice draw.
Beening a native to Atlanta, there was recently a Panda born at the Zoo, however this was like the 10th try. It's very hard to do and often takes multiple trys. I believe that Disney could do it, and it wopuld spike their attendance for a while, at least that what it has done for Atlanta. The Pandas were a short time big draw and the Baby has been a draw lately, but not so sure on the extended draw.Zoo Atlanta has a couple of Pandas and it's attendance is way up. I would love to see some rare animal attractions at AK, the lions, tigers, and elephants are nice, but the naked mole rats are a lot more intersting. I also think that they should shift the Living Seas attraction over from Epcot (it makes sense), and expanding it to be able to compete with other regional aquariums.

I think the seas would have made a nice attraction at AK if it had started there but it would have to cost near a mint to move it. From what I understand it's a pretty big aquarium. If they were to move it ticket prices would almost have to go up to cover the cost, IMO. And i'd rather not see that happen (although I know it will anyway).
Just my 2cents for what it's worth.

In response to the question of breeding pandas in captivity, China has had a great deal of success in this area lately. I've even seen news stories of panda day cares where they're all raised together. It is still super expensive, but I agree that Disney could easily afford the cost.
Drop another coin in slot and I will tell you more.

Man - add pandas and you'd have an instant hit. And if any place could pull off both the politcal connections and the world-class home for them it is the folks at AK. That would really make the Asia area even more stellar. The DC Zoo has reported solid crowds with their new panda habitat and of course having cute little ones around sure helps too...

the problem for pandas are these
1) china charges millions to rent them
2) pandas are still china's "property" to take back
3) all offspring belong to china
4) us govt does not allow import of pandas unless there is a plan for research based on the pandas. all the zoos have active research and that is a requirement.
