Starting to brainwash the nephew and niece

Post by karenj2 » May Mon 14, 2007 3:17 pm

We went over to my sister's house for Mother's Day, and while we were planning our trip (me, hubby, sister & bro-in-law, plus nephew (6) and niece (2)), we listened to Subsonic.com. :)

My niece can say Mikey Mouse & Minnie Mouse. Got to find other things to brainwash them with, though.

We're heading to WDW at the end of August. YAHOO!

Oh, and for those that remember my posts last year 'round this time, my sister & her family are the only ones left in our "Grand Gathering" that I had planned. (We had invited siblings and parents on both sides of the family.) The nice thing is, I actually don't mind at this point.

I guess I should ask - any tips for things to do for the kids? (to help count down, keep them occupied in the parks, etc.)

You could start a Disney "Advent" calendar... (maybe have disney "prizes" for each day or week counted down... stickers, chocolates, coloring books, etc.
You could order "Maps" to bring along. ( I think it's on the WDW website.. there's a link floating around the forums)
You could have the kids help with the Itinerary
Have the kids start their "Packing Lists"

If you go to http://allears.net/rta/tips.php?q=Kids+Tips there's a great place where a lot of parents have tips for the kids. FUN stuff! good luck!
"Hey, Look at that guy in the Goofy Mask!" "That's not a mask!" "Oh... Sorry Lady!"

I like the whole starting them when their young, make them listen to subsonicradio.com every day, even when they are sleeping!
I know this is probably your first flight...and it's mine too...ha, ha

Knedeau - thanks for the allears.net tips! I know I've seen it before, but I couldn't remember where I had seen it. Also, I just ordered the maps. :) Now I'll have to get my sister to order a set too, 'cause I want my own set!

I really hope that my 6yo nephew is able to ride on some of the "big kid" rides - I'd love to ride on Thunder Mountain with him! (I wish Haunted Mansion was going to be open, too - that's one of my favorites.)

As far as counting down you could do one of those ring chains. Everyday you or your neice and nephew rip off a ring. And you could have the rings say different things or ask them trivia questions. That's what one of my elemetary school teachers did for count downs to feild trips. So by the time we left for the feild trip we already knew a lot about the place we were visiting. My 2nd grade class and I loved it!!
I do stuff sometimes.

My kids were born with Disney genes! No need for brainwashing, just reinforcement! :D

I like the "Advent Calendar" countdown idea!

Get the kids to watch Disney videos and get the trip planning DVD's... Disneyland can be a bit overwhelming when you come from a small town to a fantasyland filled with 65000 people and movie characters come to life... Oh, and some of the sing-a-long songs Disneyland DVD's are good too.

Just a tip for hot days in the park. I do not have children but everytime we are in the park on a hot day we see many children playing in the fountains (esp in EPCOT) I would suggest maybe taking a change of cloths or letting the kids wear bathing suits to the park so they can have fun and cool off in the water and not be uncomfortable the rest of the day. Have a great time in Disney!!! It is a blast!!!

My nephew went to WDW when he was a baby (<1), and also went to Disneyland Paris when he was 4 for his birthday 'cause my sister & BIL were living in Germany at the time... I'm a little more worried about my 2yo niece, who is firmly in the middle of her "terrible twos". Luckily, she is still cute, even during a meltdown.
