Dr. Ravenscroft wrote:Over at Coronado Springs they had a couple of buildings just for smoking. I think it was buildings 8a and 8b of the cabanas. so that is actually a large percentage of that complex. Had to be at least 10% of the total capacity.
That's interesting. I wonder why it would be (apparently) higher there than at other places? Is that more convention-friendly maybe *wild guess*? It'd be interesting to see the resort-by-resort breakdown (well, kinda interesting anyway).
In any case, I was referring to the overall percentage (the "3.5 percent of the total 24,000 rooms"). That still seems like a pretty small change to the overall policy, to my mind.

I couldn't agree more with the ban. You find a way to smoke in a public place and NOT infringe on MY space and air, then you can smoke all you want. I hate going into hotel rooms that reek of smoke...no matter what you do you just cannot clean all of that smell out of a room.
Take a side trip to Universal Studios sometime while you're in Orlando. They either do not have a smoking policy in place, or they completely choose to ignore it. People there smoke anywhere they want with total disregard for everybody else. I would never want to see Disney be that way.

You realize that insensitive jerk was ignoring the Disney smoking policy anyway, right? Some people will ignore rules just because they're jerks.
And if that had happened to my kid I probably would have slugged the guy.

I like the new rules, but I'm hoping that it doesn't encourage those who don't follow the rules just to randomly smoke in any room. Hopefully the smoking areas will be easily accessible and the fees for smoke damage in rooms will be high.
Drop another coin in slot and I will tell you more.

This has happened to me more than once at Disney. When you have that many people in one place it's just not a good idea to be carrying around a burning torch! No matter how careful you are someone is going to get hit with it and if it does not touch your skin and burn you then it will screw up your clothes or even worse your DISNEY MERCHANDISE! I usually just look at the person and shake my head like "you f#*!in idiot..." Can people not go for 5 minutes without a cigarette?

Can they go 5 minutes with out a smoke? No they can not. But I don't want to get into a battle of smokers vs nonsmokers. I just want to say Hurrrraaay for Disney for making the new rules. I think it's more than fair that they have designated areas.
What smokers, and nonsmokers have to realize is no one wants their vacation ruined. In a perfect world Smokers would smoke in designated areas and not in rooms, or standing in lines, or in the crowds trying to make their way out the door. Alas, we do not live in a perfect world. But at least many of us are trying!

I agree and I think they (smokers) should have a place to go smoke. I just think it's really irresponsible for those that don't obey the rules to walk around smoking in a crowd. My city is currently having a debate of smoking in restaurants. I personally don't like the smoke around me while I am eating and most restaurants non-smoking section is a joke anyway. You can't really separate the two. However, I do believe in the rights of business owners to allow smoking at their establishments. Government nor anyone else should be able to tell them what they can and cannot do regarding things of that nature. I believe that if you don't like smoking at a restaurant then you should not go to that restaurant. One of two things will happen. Either the place will go out of business due to lack of patrons or it will continue to do just fine because there are enough paying customers that are also smokers to support it. It's up to the business owner, whether it be a small mom and pop restaurant or something as big as Disney. The market will dictate what works and what does not.

I'm all for it too. Kids (both young and old) shouldn't be exposed to second hand smoke.

This is getting a little off topic but I wanted to say that my city had the same debate several years ago and finally banned smoking in all public places. The bar/restaurant owners protested before the ban and feared the worst saying that they would be out of business in a matter of months...in reality its been almost 3 years now and I don't think any closed. They adapted: Expanding outdoor patios and actually building outdoor smoking places. One even charged a $1 fee for a lifetime membership to their bar making it a 'private members club' and getting around the 'public places' law. A ban on smoking does not hurt businesses at all. Though it is really strange going into a bar with the air clear...you can see all the way to the far wall and you don't smell disgusting when you leave. One problem I see is that now the sidewalks are filled with smokers and being totally ignorant as they often are, they throw their butts on the ground! At least at Disney they have workers that pick everybit of litter!

At first she kept saying 'it didn't touch me...really' and I did have some things to say to him. The I noticed she kept looking at her arm and I realized that she was hurt (it was dark and hard to see) we went to the washrooms and in the light it was already starting to blister...by then the jerk was long gone. Plus I think he was around 120 years old so if I slugged him it would have been me the mobbed would attack. I'm thankful it didn't leave a lasting scar (4-5 weeks) and she isn't bothered too much by it. It just reinforces her dislike for smoking which is a good thing!

You can count me in as absolutely thrilled about the non-smoking policy. Every evening when you left the park there was plenty of people lighting up on the way to the bus stops. I have asthma and I have a hard time when people are smoking around me.

After working in a Hotel for 2 years, it is nice to see they are going smoke free. Some nights people would smoke so much, it made the halls smell of smoke, and non-smoking rooms would complain about the smell "from down the hall".

It doesn't matter if they allow smoking or not, because there are insensitive smokers who will break the rules and smoke whereever no matter what.. But, That being said, there are ALSO insensitive NON-Smokers who ALSO break the rules and take away from other people's good time (like those people who throw their trash on the ground, or put gum in places will someone will sit on it, loud in th hotel rooms, etc.)
I think the issue here is not about smoking or nonsmoking....It all comes down to respect for others. Personally (and I'm a non-smoker here) I think that they should still allow people to smoke in their own hotel-rooms (If people want to slowly kill themselves, that's their perogitive), what I think Disney SHOULD DO, is provide better air filtration for those rooms, as well as to the smoking areas so that nonsmokers don't have to deal so much with it.
