David Beckham in a Disney ride

Post by Sarah Turp » Jan Sat 27, 2007 11:42 am

Was just messing about on the internet taking a much needed break from statistical mechanics when I found this.

http://www.forbes.com/feeds/ap/2007/01/ ... 67103.html

Apparently Disney is making a new ride for MGM in Florida and also the California Adventure park. This new ride is to star various current celebrities including David Beckham, Beyonce and Oliver Platt.

What do you guys think about this? Can no one else see there is a major problem with this as soon as one of the actors/actresses is involved in the next big scandal.

I don't think it will be that big of a deal. With it just being an ad campaign I think the exposure for something big happening is not that great. I do however like the concept of the ride in Disney Studios.

I think you got two separate stories combined. The article was about a new Toy Story attraction, which sounds like it might be cool PLUS a new ad campaign for the Million Dreams event that features celebrities photographed as Disney characters. The ride and ad campaign are not one and the same.

The article goes on to talk about the first family chosen to sleep in the new suite in the Cinderella castle:
"He, his 8-year-old sister Hannah and their parents Jim and Lisa Fouch were carried to the castle in pumpkin-shaped carriage pulled by white horses, past an extravagant scene with Cinderella characters...."

How sweet is that!

The photographer is Annie Liebovitz (sp?), who is sometimes brilliant and sometimes just pushes the envelope too far. I watched a documentary about her in which she was doing a fashion shoot with Keira Knightly as Dorothy (Wizard of Oz) and it was just surreal and a bit creepy.

OTOH, the Cinderella and Prince Philip photos are very nice, esp. Cinderella.

yeah, those pictures (the Cinderella and Prince Philip) look great and almost looks like a live action movie still (like they're remaking the classic animation in a live-action version).

But that alice in wonderland.... that's not pushing the envelope with that (the general premise is good). The people she used to play the characters is just wrong.

IMHO, great photo quality, and engaging... but confusing. What's the point of the campaign?
No, no... He's got a point.

That Alice in Wonderland photo is just scaring me. It's truly terrifying. The other two aren't half bad though.

From what I've heard, these ads are going to be in magazines like Vogue, so they're geared more towards adults. Perhaps they're trying to get the image across that Disney doesn't just make kids' dreams come true.

Strange article, they really mashed a lot of stories in one.

Odd campaign - marketing folks at work again. That Alice in Wonderland one is esp. bizzare. If they are going for the magazines geared more for adults or the more sophisticated crowd it is lost on me. Then again I've never claimed to act like an adult or be sophisticated :D

I'm like you on the adult/sophisticated thing . I agree with you on both statements!

The Cinderella photo is nice though.

I think Oliver Platt is the only good choice in the Wonderland picture

Wow. I LOVE the Wonderland picture... Platt is ridiculously underrated, and while Beyonce is obviously an unorthodox choice for Alice, she's a fun one. And Lyle Lovett? Leibovitz dusted off that fella just because he vaguely resembles... yeah, look again... an actual rabbit.

Anyway, as someone else mentioned, these photos have nothing to do with a new attraction. Just a new marketing campaign. I love it.

Is Lovett supposed to be the March Hare? I wasn't really sure. I don't think there's anything wrong with Beyonce as Alice either and I don't think there are many better choices for the Hatter than Platt. The one I'm not so sure on is Beckham, mostly because of the audience. Are these going to be in American magazines? Because I gaurantee you 9/10 Americans would not be able to tell that's Beckham (myself included) and more so I'm not even sure how many Americans even know who Beckham is. I think the Cinderalla pic actually "Pushes the envelope" more than any of them as Johansson's characters are almost always highly sexual, vixens who tend toward having affairs with older, sometimes married men. Not exactly the image I'd imagine Disney wanting for their most premier princess. I mean she's beautiful (hot  ) but still.
