July 4th, 2006. The Disney (MGM?) Studios!

We woke up early and got to The Studios about 20 minutes before park opening. They had just opened the turnstyles so that you could walk past the Curio store and all of the Hollywood Blvd. gift shops and then they had it roped off where you can turn right onto Sunset and make a b-line to RnRC & ToT....which is of course what I think every single one of the hundreds lined up did. We were going to be particularly far back from the front until I went on a little scouting expedition through the gift shop where I found an unoccupied side entrance to Sunset in the form of an awning tarp to be rolled up at park opening. I got my party and we all moved up there, but others had found it by then too but we were still significantly closer.

They had a little opening ceremony with a family pre-selected to be the "Stars of the Day" or something where a director and actress talk about how beautiful they are etc. and then got the family to say "Lights, Cameras, ACTION!" and the park opened. We headed off down Sunset with the flood of people and snagged FPs for RnRC, then went straight to ToT. The man in front of us thought it was quite comical as I started to point out the flora in the ToT queue with remarks like "This is a varitible corncucopia of vegetation, remarkable specimens indeed!" We got on ToT and my g/f was very scared :P Not of the drop but of the "creepiness" - the thing that really scared her and something I'd never seen before was during the drop there is like a mannequin standing on one of the girders/rafters in front of the elevator that is of a man leaning against one of the vertical girders non-challantly staring at you and as you fall lightning lights him up and he's featureless. It was pretty creepy and I think it's new! The first ride the drop seemed crappy but we jumped back on the line and re-rode and the second time it was an awesome series of drops and ascents!

From there we headed over to RnRC which I absolutely adore! The takeoff into the loop is out of this world and I always pick up my feet at this part so I get the sensation of being airborne! (at Hulk btw I was "running" in my seat and "jumping" sort of like Dumb and Dumber and that was pretty cool too! I felt like Sonic the Hedgehog!)

From RnRC we headed off to the Voyage of the Little Mermaid and grabbed FPs for the next show then it was off to the Great Movie Ride! They only sent out one car and it was the gangster car which is my fave, but sadly both the conducter and gangster weren't very good - especially the gangster, she didn't have the voice, didn't project, and didn't seem really into it I guess :( I still love the Great Movie Ride though. My friend also had to get special Fourth of July pins at the hat as it was the only place that sold them in MGM. His nieces said they only sold them on that day and they needed them for their collection. He got each of them two, with Minnie and Mickey. I bought one for myself with Donald Duck and it's pretty cool, it's shaped like a star with Donald saluting and holding an American flag and under it attached by two little chain links is a rectangular piece that says "Walt Disney World Fourth of July 2006"

After that we JUST made it into the Little Mermaid Show before they closed the doors on us. I love that show a lot with all of the puppets and my g/f adored it as LM is one of her fave Disney movies. The only problem is the parents who bring in their infants and let them SHRIEK at the highest tone they possibly can throughout the whole production. I'm not saying don't bring your babies to Disney World but if you're in a theater and they start crying so loud that it is disruptive to everyone else, bite the bullet and excuse yourself. We shouldn't all have to suffer because you do! (This happened again at Muppets 4-D and my friend almost said something to the parents to leave the theater) This type of behavior is just disrespectful to everyone around you. When my parents took me as a baby anywhere public I know for a fact they always excused themselves from wherever it was be it restaurant, WDW theater, etc. because they've drilled it into my head.

After Voyage of the Little Mermaid I believe we headed towards the backlot. I had wanted to get FPs for Lights, Motors, Action! On the way, however, we saw that the next Who Wants to Be a Millionaire show was entering the theater so we jumped in with no wait. The theater was only 1/3-1/2 full and I was surprised. I hadn't been there since 2004 but back then it was PACKED every show. I thought "Yes! Finally, I'll get on the show as there's not as much competition!" - wrong. The first fastest finger question was about Brendan Fraser movies (which I would've gotten if I had thought about it because it was an order question and they were all seperated by yeaaars) but I knew invariably someone who randomly presses the 4 buttons always wins because they get like 0.04 seconds. So I did the same and got it wrong. Some 9 year old kid got it. He went up and it was one of those "Oh no!" moments. First, the kid had a mullet. Second, he didn't know where he lived/where he was from. He told the host to ask his family and then his family didn't know either. They could only give an answer as to being from Florida and then "central Florida" or something but they didn't know what town they were from. The host commented "This might be a very short game" which I don't think any member of the family got. Third, this kid seems like he's tried to get on the show forlike a year straight, he basically hurried the host through his spiel in a very rude way and then when the host asked him what the prizes were at 1000 points he said smething like "10 pins and an ENORMOUUUUUS hat!" (or whatever the actual pin value is, I just picked up on the ENORMOUSSSSSS hat! and so did the host who said 'I don't know about enormous....but it is a hat') Anyway, the kid's going along and I'm ghetting all the answers correct and then they give the audience update and I'm like 3rd only back by a few points. I get a few more right and then they come to a question about the architecht Frank Lloyd Wright and the question is what style does he practice. The answer was ARTS & CRAFTS?!? I thought that was a joke answer! I didn't even know arts & crafts was an architechtual style other than when the building materials are paste and popsicle sticks!!! So goodbye my chances of getting on. The next guy up was an older man who was there with his sons who were teenage+ and his wife and everyone else was shopping or at the resort or something. This time I fumbled a few and knew I had no shot, but at the time I thought he was going to lose I THOUGHT I had a chance. There was a question about who won the second season of American Idol and sadly I knew it but the audience poll said Clay Aiken, then the phone a complete stranger said 100% Clay Aiken and at that point people in thee audience gasped and that tipped him off I think because he was going to say Clay twice and then he changed after that (well actually sexcond gasp, the first was after the poll). Then the question he lost on was what type of body of water is the Caspian Sea - and apparently it's a lake, who knew? The game ended there anyway.

From WWTBAM we walked on over towards the bAcklot Tou and I ran ahead to L,M,A! where I was informed there were NO FAST PASSES FOR THAT DAY?! So then I ran in the blistering heat  to Star Tours and snagged FPs for that instead then hussled back to the Backlot Tour which we did. It started to POUR when we were getting on the trams and we were getting SO SOAKED! It was nuts! In Catasrophe Canyon you couldn't even tell they had rain effects because the real rain was raining so much harder!

After that we headed over to Star Tours and rode which is always fun. Nothing big to writ about here though!

Then it was time for Lights, Motors, Action! This show really rocks! It is very impressive and I'm not a big fan of watching shows while at Disney. But the most exciting part happened BEFORE the show - maybe even the most exciting part of the day if not trip. We were sitting in the stands answering car chase movie trivia when all of asudden a loud cheer rose from some of the crowd - I looked up and it was a PERFECT view of the space shuttle taking off on Independence Day! You could just see the rocket going up into the sky with a brilliant burning trail (we also heard the boom but I just thought it was from catasrophe canyon) followed by a column of smoke. It was so inspiring I get goosebumps thinking about it! It just kept going as everyone in the crowd cheered sooo loud and gave a standing ovation. Then the Disney folks zoomed a camera in so it played on the bigscreen for anyone who didn't know what was going on I guess but it was right there! my friend got some pics it was so awesome!

More to come!

Okay so actually before we went to Star Tours I omitted we ate at the Flatbread whatever it's called over by the Honey I Shrunk the Audience playground. It was pretty good but the menu's different than what was formerly there.

After LMA we headed over and watched the Muppets movie, but a shrieking child through the entire presentation put a damper on it for everyone I think. There were times when you couldn't hear some audio like those 2 guys (Sorry, I don't know their names) on the balcony really couldn't be heard well over the screams. It may have been the same screamer from The Voyage of the Little Mermaid

After that we decided to head over towards 50's because our PS was drawing closer. As we walked over we grabbed FP for the next Indy show then watched...or listened...to Sounds Dangerous. I know a lot of people really hate this show but I kinda like it. And in a pinch if you're reaaaaaaal tired you could always go there and take your headphones off for a nap. The water at the end would be a perfect wake up! Although my seat didn't get the squirt.

After it was over we headed back over to Indy and got front row center seats. Both myself andmy friend got selected to be extras which I have never ever been selected for before. Then again there's only been one previous trip where I was old enough to volunteer. I got suited up to look like Lawrence of Arabia or somebody from the French Foreign Legion or something and it was actually really hot wearing that stuff. It was so cool being on stage for those scenes! I never understood why you had to be 18 to volunteer before but it probably has to do with keeping up and staying with the leader woman to avoid being blown up! Those explosions were pretty close :P I always love that show but that was definitely the most fun I've ever had there and I have a whole bunch of funny pictures of me all dressed up. Plus I got to meet Indy!

After the show we headed over to 50's where to make a long story short (see the MGM dining poll in WDW section for more details) the service was fun but terrible in terms of actually serving. We never got utensils from our waiter even though we asked twice including when he brought us our food! So we got to sit there for 5-10 minutes letting the food get cold waiting for him before asking another server for utensils. My food was pretty good but the portion was pretty tiny, my friend and g/f got decent sized portions but weren't thrilled with the quality of the food, which is kinda bad when you're paying 17+ for a meal. I know it's themepark food but it can still be good and fairly portioned i.e. most epcot restaurants, mythos at IOA etc. Then we waited for 15 minutes for the check, then my friend needed change and the change took another 15 minutes. I think I'll stick to Mama Melrose in the future.

After that we headed back over to ToT/RRC for a couple of re-rides and had a blast on them as always.

From there we got in line for Fantasmic which seemed so huge  it was like down to the shops on Sunset and about 8 people across! But the CM told me that we'd be fine, it was only about 1/8th of the theater! I never realized that amphitheater held that many people :P As we were waiting they shot off their special 4th of July fireworks (I'm not a big fireworks guy though myself) and coming from Boston I wasn't expecting Disney to impress me on 4th fireworks (probably the only time I'd say 'Wasn't expecting Disney to impress me' in reference to their parks) and as anticipated the fireworks themselves weren't all that impressive but their choreography was pretty neat. The finale, however, shocked me - I have never seen so many fireworks go off at once in my entire life. It looked like it must've been about 20 seperate shells all at once and then it was like rapid fire for 2 seconds. It was nuts!

After the fireworks they opened Fantasmic and let us in. We could see Illumination and I think MK fireworks just above the treeline in the theater which was nice. We got good seats about 1/2 way up in the middle. People got the wave going and although I vowed not to join in as I reserve that only for Sox games I was eventually sucked into becoming one with the Wave.

Fantasmic was great, but I still think that it's overrated  I'm sorry! I just think they use the water fan projections wayyyy too much. It's a cool effect but I mean only to a certain point. I realize they need something to fill time while they change sets but it just seems excessive to me. It's still probably my fave Disney show though at WDW.

So that...was a very long....very seperated/spread out...recap of the July 4 at MGM. Next up July 5 at Epcot (Geez it's been over a month since these days I'm overdue! Sorry!)
