Non-park WDW activities

I'll second your thought on the Sassagoula boat ride. We've done that several times, and it's a great way to relax for a few minutes while you get to see parts of the WDW property that you normally don't see.

A couple of years ago, I was down in Dayton Beach on business and decided to take a short trip to WDW. I didn't have any tickets so I just rode the monorail for a couple hours and ate dinner @ Poly. Then I hopped on the monorail to Contemperary and watched the fireworks show from one of the balconies. I love visiting all the resorts and watching the families gettng on and off the monorail was great.

The last time we were at Disney, at the end of the day we were leaving the Magic Kingdom on our way back to the Epcot parking lot to get to our car. We sat upfront of the Monorail with a few women who had been there all day and hadn't stepped into one of the parks. They were just riding the monorails and visiting the resorts along the monorail paths all day. I had never thought about it until then, but i could definatly see how that would be a great day to spend a day. They got to see Illuminations and wishes from the monorail which is real cool.

I always suggest an day at Fort Wilderness. Great, cheap Buffet, Hayride, Petting Zoo, Rocking Chair porch (with bar), Outdoor movie, singalong and marshmallow roast. Noisy peacocks, walking trail, fishing and Biking (W/rental), Beach, water pagent, boat rentals, playground, Hoo-De-Doo. More I forget to mention...

Boardwalk is also a great non-park day...

I second the Boardwalk suggestion. You can walk up and down the boardwalk as well as around Crescent Lake to check out the Yacht and Beach Club Resorts. If you're up for a lengthier walk, you can even take the walkway along the canal over to Disney Studios and back.

oooh when we have enough time my wife and I do that too. Love just walking around the resorts. Fav's are Poly, Contempory, Wilderness Lodge, and Animal Kingdom Lodge. Oh and we visit the gift shops of all of them!!

I enjoy going to see Bob Jackson play the piano. A few nights a week he comes to Port Orleans Riverside's River Roost lounge. Very entertaining.

I like the water mice too, and last trip my wife and I rented a canopy boat at the Yacht Club harbor and debated whether to pick up people waiting at the MGM dock!

One thing I do not recommend is horseback riding at Ft. Wilderness. LAME! You ride single file at a pace that would bore even a ten-year-old horse lover and just wander past campsites and cabins. Dullsville.

We love taking the monorail from the Poly (where we usually stay) to the GF to see the Christmas decorations and then over to the Contemporary for shopping at their gift shop. Since we tend to vacation in December, there are always so many decorations to see.

I love to visit resorts as well, but recentlly my trips have been limited to a week and to get all the parks we want in we go-go-go non-stop and no time to relax. I wish I could just spend a month down there some summer.

My Sis and I have been planning our Itinerary for WDW for Dec. We were thinking of getting massages and taking High Tea at the Grand Floridian!

My favorite time to resort hop is in December with all of the holiday decorations up. You can just meander from place to place seeing which resorts top each other. (And end up at the Floridian, which inevitibly wins.)

We usually only have about a week as well, but manage to slip in some resort hopping. It's a nice thing to do on a first or last day at WDW, when you don't want to waste a day on your Park Hopper. It's also pretty easy to slip in a visit to a resort on the monorail line, or to take a boat to WL, Boardwalk, or Yacht and Beach Club from the parks.

Riding the monorail, I feel like a 5 year old kid when I'm on it.

I also love to sit back and hang out at the resort too especially if I'm staying inside the park.
