Well it could be the same size as the old Monsanto home of the Future, that was pretty small too...

The "latest thing" in architecture school is being able to do more with less. It's like minimalism, but without the big spaces. So, they design spaces to have multiple purposes and take advantage of every nook and cranny, designing things to fit and function. It's something New Yorkers can quite likely relate to (I've heard about the size of some apartments there) and us Midwesterners look at and go "Huh?"
Well, not ever being aware of what was taught in architecture school 5, 10, or 20 years ago, I can't say with 100% confidence that it's the "latest thing" but I can say that it's what's emphasized now.
I would probably have a hard time living in that house. I seem to accumulate
lots and lots of junk really, really cool stuff very easily.
