Re: Disney Hollywood Studios Expansion Rumored
I remember when my family and I went to MGM when it very first opened, I remember being super disappointed b/c there was basically nothing in the park! I've come to love it over the years, I just love that entire era, even though there are dated attractions in the park now...I still love it. I can totally see where a facelift is needed though. Backlot Tour isn't what it used to be...and TGMR is in desperate need of some help! Hopefully Disney will hit the mark with the expansion?!

Re: Disney Hollywood Studios Expansion Rumored
The die-hards would probably have a major issue with the changes if they did a whole park renovation since GMR would need to be gutted and replaced as it is dated and the method of story-telling is not even remotely modern.

What would they even do with GMR?!?! I can't imagine the park w/o it though. But not even sure how you would update it?!

I can imagine it gone, and so can the imagineers.
They probably would demo the entire building, including the rip-off of the Chinese theater since it may have been the focal point when it opened, but having a direct copy of a building that is still in existence seems like a weak design decision.

Re: Disney Hollywood Studios Expansion Rumored
There is no current news or rumor that even suggests GMR is going to be removed. The only kind of rumors that have ever surfaced about GMR have been updates to the attraction. Thus, GMR is going to stay where it is for a while. Disney isn't going to demolish the building. The Chinese Theater is such a Hollywood icon full of cinema history. It was a great idea by Disney to replicate such an icon. Disney pulled out the actual blueprints to the original Chinese Theater to build the MGM version. There is no forced perspective like CInderella's Castle, it is full scale. Disney added in details from the theater in the 30s and 40s that were removed by the 80s. Disney is also very clever to make the distance from the turnstiles of MGM to the Chinese Theater the same as the turnstiles at Disneyland to Sleeping Beauty's castle.Wizzard419 wrote:I can imagine it gone, and so can the imagineers.

Very cool, had no idea Disney went through all of that with the Chinese Theater! I really hope they don't remove it, I love it! I liked how you used to be able to see right when you walked into the park, until that silly hat blocked it!

Re: Disney Hollywood Studios Expansion Rumored
"New rumors came out today about the DHS car entrance. Apparently the new entrance will be off of Victory Way across from the area of Pop Century. Resort buses will still use the Buena Vista Drive entrance. The entrance off of World Drive will be gone."
It seems like Disney is looking for ways to expand DHS. This would relieve traffic where the current entrance is. I don't know what to think of about this rumor. I would like to think that the entryway is going to stay the same, but who knows with the DHS construction eventually coming. The article linked below has a more comprehensive talk about the rumored project.

It would probably be the least painful direction to develop with (the other ways would require relocation of backstage buildings, parking lots, or moving major roads). It would also be near star tours (if they were going to make a land for the universe) and the attractions between the wall and star tours are all really old and dated.

Does anyone know...when Disney built DHS, did they have in mind to someday expand it?!

When they built DHS, the plan for expansion was Sunset Boulevard. That expansion was finished in the mid 90s.boilerbabe wrote:Does anyone know...when Disney built DHS, did they have in mind to someday expand it?!

Re: Disney Hollywood Studios Expansion Rumored
The area in the back of DHS is home to a lot of people working in the broadcast, marketing, and technical areas of Disney. The only other room they can possibly build on is the area south of Indiana Jones and Star Tours. The link I posted earlier has an aerial view of the park that has a space for expansion south.
