Paint would not work as it would chip off and eventually look horrendous. I actually am kind of surprised they didn't surface it like Main Street USA. I do think ultra realistic is the plan and that possible freshly paved look is what they want to maintain.

yeah...I guess if they want it to look like freshly paved asphalt they are looking at yearly repaving.

Did not get time to check today since I had another meeting, so that will probably be next week.

With replacing the paving, it is probably considerably easier to do with asphalt since there is a machine that tears it up as opposed to needing to jackhammer it and the slurry machine can lay down the new surface fast as well.

Tons of factors go into road-wear, and (generally) roads are built to their expected usage. If it was poured with foot traffic in mind, it probably doesn't have a support bed for equipment and occasional vehicle traffic. Given the amount of adjustments and tweaking gone on in the first year of the new land, probably many more vehicles and higher loads than anticipated had to roll across, meaning a fresh coat was needed.

We're probably all over-analyzing this, because it's not the first time Disney didn't get something exactly right on the first try.

Also if Disney paved it properly in the first place there should be two layers. All they have to do is mill up the top layer and put down a layer.


GeoffS: Definitely not the first time Disney hasn't gotten things correct on the first try. It's happened before and it will happen again. The important thing is they are trying to make it right in the end.

How late did grad nights used to last? That is nice that they allow them to come all day now ~ and with less impact on regular guests.
Love those flowers by the New Orleans train station ~ so colorful!
Is the Carthay Circle restaurant the fancy restaurant only open to club members?
Is there normally a character animation academy at DCA? Or is that something special just for AP holders?
The way the carpet in the Grand Californian matches up with the tile is pretty neat

One thing I love about these Dateline Disneyland posts are that they give you a chance to see how much work goes into running a place like DLR.

For some reason the flowers and landscaping at DL is so much more beautiful than at MK. The MK landscaping is fantastic...but you just don't see the colors and "pop" that you get at DL.

Grad nights usually go until like 5 AM or later, like the ones all the high schools do around here. The local schools seem to lean more towards senior trip to the park during the day and then an official grad night at some other time. I'm not sure if there is a reason local schools stay away, but they do.

Fun thing, many of the plants at DLR are potted plants, even when they are in the ground. If you look close you can see the containers buried in the dirt. It is probably so they can swap out plants that have bloomed out without having to kill the plant.

I think the climate is a bit better in DL too. Florida gets awfully hot and humid, but then can have cold snaps here and there too. That is hard on the poor little plants. I'm in awe at how any of the parks keep the greenery looking so nice though
It seemed an odd time, 3 am, for the grad night to end is all. 5 am seems better, although I suppose it is all relative isn't it?

I think it officially ends like 3 but, just like with a normal day, it takes a while to clear them out of the park and then they need to use that time to clean up the trash and bodily fluids left behind.

It gets cold here too, below 70 cold, but if you come during December and we get a cold snap, you can usually see the workers out replacing the poinsettias because they will take major damage in the cold.

Depending on the week it can be over 80, a common occurrence during the month is a return of the Santa Ana winds, which spikes the temperature during the days and sends them back down during the nights.

If you are flying into SNA and you are flying in over the ocean as opposed to over land, that means the winds are present.
