The "grandfather rule" makes sense as long as there are no accidents. Honestly, was falling off the track on Alice really a big enough concern to install railings? If it's truly a "disaster is going to happen" then, yeah, fix it. It makes business sense because you don't want the bad publicity. But if we're talking freak accident potential (like the Mark Twain decapitation), then you just can't plan for everything.

Alice is one that apparently has had a lot of injury claims against it (supposedly in the top ten for the first 40 years). I am not sure if anyone (worker or otherwise) has fallen off of it, but at the same time "just because nothing bad has happened" isn't a pass either. My guess is that it wasn't a concern as much as the fines were getting out of hand.

The Columbia death was something they should have planned for since it apparently happened before. With the subs, they use the same setup where the cleats are on the boat rather than on the dock, similar situation happened where a sub comes in too fast, they threw a synthetic rope around it (thinking it was stopping) and it pulls it off and sends it flying towards the people in line. No one was hurt but it should have been a wake up call since it happened prior to the Columbia.

Good lord, hard to believe that much foot traffic could wear down the asphalt that fast. Then again, road surface may not be as well suited to foot traffic as the concrete surfaces.

That is incredible! You wouldn't think foot traffic would be more punishing to asphalt than vehicle traffic ~ and roads don't get repaved yearly!
As for them not allowing people on the Fantasmic stage on Tom Sawyer's Island ~ did they ever allow people out there? I wouldn't have thought that would be a guest area anyhow.

The stage itself mostly lies below the walking surfaces and during the day there are removable rope barricades in the area. They might not be tall enough or the easy to remove element may be what caused issue.

I still think the water tower is the biggest issue with the DOSH. As stated that is something that has been done for 55 years + without an issue and all of a sudden it is disallowed.

As for Cars Land repaving... I was there 6 months ago and it looked fine. I'm just wondering if they want to keep the freshly paved look for Route 66 to mimic the ending of the first Cars movie. If so then look for that to get paved yearly.

The problem has been that companies use smaller heights to set precedence for lax safety, so OSHA has to come in with stricter regulations. At the same time, is the experience ruined for anyone now that the water tower effect isn't the same? Probably not, other than for die-hards who will complain but not stop paying to come in.

My guess is that part of the reason they may have also repaved was that major construction equipment drove over the road to install those new poles for the holiday display. Just like with renovations, you want to do the floors after all the construction crews are done since they will jack it up.

Totally forgot about that. I was there during the holidays when they had the extra poles in for the decorations. Didn't notice any issues unless it occurred during the removal process. If that is the case with those poles then this will indeed be a yearly repaving. Does anyone know how they are covering the holes up. I'm guessing little manhole covers covered up by the garbage cans?

I'll check next time I am there, I can't recall. There were no noticeable cracks/damage to the road but the other possibility is that the surface doesn't keep the deep black look and they just have to replace it/re-seal it.

If the color is an issue...I would think they could just paint it instead of repaving every year.

Maybe they just didn't think long term when they paved it the first time and had to re-imagine it to address whatever didn't go as planned.

would a matte black not look like asphalt? I guess you would lose the porous look and feel that asphalt has...so you are probably right.
