Then it states that you must keep a 16 minute mile. How can it be untimed if you have to keep a specific time???
I am definitely signing up for the 5K this year. Will do it this weekend.
I 'm pretty sure an untimed event just means the competitors are not given chips to wear about their person that calculates the time from crossing the start line to crossing the finish line like they do for the Half and the Marathon.
Mousekedude will probably be able to tell you about the 16 minute mile thing though I'm pretty sure Mouseoholic walked the course last year but I don't know what kind of time it took.

I also believe that there is no winner declared in the 5K.
Average walking speed of most humans is about 5K an hour. So it would be a brisk walk. My friend's parents did it in 2010. They walked it and had no problem.

Yeah...the benefit to running it would be that you could stop and take pictures if you wanted to.
When you walk you have to keep walking...just keep walking...just keep walking...

Alright, I'm going to keep myself accountable by posting here each day. I am back on a training schedule for the 5K in January. This morning I did 3 miles at 49 minutes. Now this number is very good for me as it shaved 5 minutes off of my normal time of 54 minutes. But, I would have been swept off of the course for not making the time of a 16 minute mile. There's always tomorrow.

I think it's awesome that you've set a goal and are training for it. I just don't have ... I don't know what ... to go out and run. Or bike. Not sure what it is.
At any rate, keep it up!!!

Great Job Nacler, you may have got away without being swept at that rate. I am sure they would have realised you were really close to the limit. No need to run everyday every two days or so is fine give your body time to rest between runs you have tons of time until the race. YOU CAN DO IT.

NaCler - I am certain that by running just 3 time per week that you can easily get down to 45 minutes or even better. If on the day of the 5k in January you are still a bit uncomfortable with your potential time, I would line up in the first starting group. Last year they started the race in either 2 or 3 groups and since this is not a timed race I really don't see the harm in starting with the quicker group. The sweep time begins when the last person in the last group crosses the start line. By starting in the first group you will pick up several minutes just by virture of all the other runners behind you. Just a thought...but I am sure that you will not need the extra time. Best of luck to you as you train.

Thank you everybody. I knew you guys would help and push me. I am going to walk/run on Mondays, just walk on Tuesdays and alternate those. My knees still aren't happy with me for doing this, so I don't want to push it too much.

Day 2 - Another 3 miles in 49 minutes today. I was planning on just briskly walking but I invited my wife along with me this morning and she kept pushing me to jog every now and then. I won't make that mistake again! hahaha....

That's great that you have someone to walk/jog with. That should make training more fun

It totally helps. When you train with a team or a group or a partner, it makes the unmotivated that much more likely to get out of bed on a cold winter's morn to go run a few miles.
I'm telling you...I would have never run a half nor this upcoming whole without my partner and inspiration: my awesome wife!
Keep inviting your wife NaCler!!

Amy/WWDRH - She mentioned that I would never invite her to go with me again. But, to tell the truth, I enjoyed the push. Shhh, don't tell her.
cccmouse - Thanks for the info on the corrals. I thought they assigned you a corral and you didn't get to choose??
Day 3 - I took it easy today as I was running late from errands and wanted to give my body a break as you guys suggested. I did 2 miles in 34 minutes. So, 17 minutes/mile today. No slacking tomorrow. I may invite the wife again.

Run/walk is a VERY respected program for achieving marathon goals. You can find a great program from Jeff Galloway online. He's a regular columnist in Runner's World magazine, so you can have confidence in his methods. You're also running only 3-4 times a week, meaning you have the important recovery time factored in. Consistent run/walking helps improve knee strength, contrary to what people believe about running destroying knees.
