The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh for VHS
Does anyone know if it would be legal to make a copy of a VHS version of "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh"?
I know somebody who has a original copy of it and I would like to make a copy of it. I remember my family used to have a original VHS, but I don't remember when we got rid of it. I miss it . I also want to see it again. Any lawyers/copyright people in the house who can answer this? I won't do anything illegal; that's just bad.

Not even remotely legal, while it's legal to rip your CDs for MP3 players in the US the ripping of analog format to digital is crazy illegal.
That being said, the odds of you being caught are so slim it doesn't matter.

I agree with Wiz. Although it is punishable by death (what it seems like by all of the copyright warnings), no one will care and you will most likely never have any issues with doing it. Although, this site does not endorse doing anything illegal.

Yet at the same time it violates a crazy amount of copyright and IP laws...

You mean it's not legal (for argument's sake)to run a VHS through and All in Wonder Card and digitize all of your VHS tapes to you computer and then burn them to DVD?? I'm so glad I've never have done that!!

Apparently, by the law's definition, it really isnt'. The reason that "backing up" a CD/DVD (bluray might still be out) is fine while copying a VHS will get you sent to "Pound you in the a$$ prison" is the means by which it is captured. One is just copying raw data while the other is an unauthorized reproduction of a broadcast.

I wave never heard anyone make that distinction, Wizz. Interesting.

The big reason that the penalties are so much worse is that it is considered a "performance" so they could slap you with fines in the unlikely event the feds found out about it. The summary of what you can do with a VHS movie you have purchased are pretty much watch it, rewind it, and if you no longer wish to own it you can throw it away or possibly sell it. You have no other rights to modify, broadcast, etc. Newer media is trying to remove the option to buy/sell used copies as it kills the bottom line.

Not even close, plus you would get double hit since you copied it twice.

I didn't say I did that. I was just putting out a hypothetical scenario.Wizzard419 wrote:Not even close, plus you would get double hit since you copied it twice.

In the hypothetical scenario you also would be traded for pudding in the prison yard...

If you were, they would be getting better quality goods like stamps (apparently they are more prized than ciggs).
