Ooh, eek. Please, please just give it a refurb. I would die to see this ride closed down

I was just thinking about this ride the other day and how it may be updated in the future. At some point, if they keep updating the last scene, it will end up being so far in the future of the prior scenes that it will be a little odd.

Re: Carousel of Progress in need of TLC!
I'm not sure they could ever make CoP a huge draw again, but I think they could tweak it a bit to bring in more guests. As others have mentioned, the final scene needs updating to bring it at least current, if not more "futuristic". From almost the beginning at DLR, the building exterior itself lacks, ummm, curb appeal? Looking at the recent post showing the photos from the '64 World's Fair, that building design, with that awesome, well-lit roof, could draw people to it. It's more like a 1/4 Spaceship Earth-look.
I'm not a fan of revisionist history, but maybe the script for the whole show needs a a serious visit, too. There have been so many attempts to appeal to different sensibilities and to me, they always fell flat. The heavy-handed women's lib show was the worst. Just thinking out loud, maybe the different eras visited could be broadened, with a bit of education yet humor to show the different perceptions of all kinds of technology. Bring in more of a cross-section from Horizons and World of Motion; maybe a really fun '50's or '60's segment, cars and music included. Give Dad his time with beads and long hair or something.
Disney knows how to make things work, maybe it's time to ask John Lassiter or Brad Bird to take a look at a beloved-by-many attraction. The teen demographic may not ever take to CoP again, but c'mon, let the guests that wanna catch a break from lines or heat have something, too

Ok, hopefully CoP gets a nice big refurb and a new last scene instead of that cheesy future Christmas one, I do still like the scene but it irritates me, why does it overlook that Mum and Dad would be about 140 years old and the Grandma would be at least 160 years old.

I agree that they really need to update the show. Some areas are so outdated and beaten up. It's sad because it is such a nice show and I really enjoy it. Especially on a hot day! You can kick back for 25-30 minutes in the cool A/C and re-energize before going back out while watching a show.
Oh thank god I'm not the only one who noticed that! That really drives me CRAZY! They really need to have the family grow up through out the show. The kids should have their own kids later on in the show. It really doesn't make scene nor is it realistic.cameronwr wrote:I do still like the scene but it irritates me, why does it overlook that Mum and Dad would be about 140 years old and the Grandma would be at least 160 years old.

The thought of CoP being dismantled and replaced is pretty saddening.i myself consider it near the top of the list of most anticipated things to do when i visit the park. The nostalgia I feel every time I see makes me grin ear to ear and not to mention the "There's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow" song being happily stuck in my head after its over.

Why does Disney take something as Wonderful and Cherished as COP and do nothing for it??

Of course they care, like with all old people/things, we put them in a corner and wait for them to finally die, only showing up on holidays and their birthday.

Re: Carousel of Progress in need of TLC!
I absolutely love the Carousel of Progress! I suppose it's because it reminds me of "old" Disneyland, of Yesterland. I actually remember the Wonderful World of Disney shows in the 1960's where Walt introduced us to the Carousel! I love all the scenes except for the last one, and I think that needs to be updated. Can you imagine the possibilities of the final scene?? Something along the lines of Horizon's (another of my most favorite Yesterland rides), it could be totally futuristic... and really capture people's imagination! I believe if they did something completely incredible with the final scene possibly even interactive with guests smartphones, it would be so popular you might even need to get a fast pass!!

Re: Carousel of Progress in need of TLC!
I have no problem with the family not aging...because their age is not important. What you see is mankind's progress through the 20th Century.
So...either the last scene needs to stay nostalgic and not focus on the future...thus keeping with the 20th Century progress theme...
Or...change every scene to me a more even flow of:
1) 1900
2) 1950s
3) 1990s
4) Relatively close future
This way you show the progress of the 20th Century leading up to what we are looking towards in the future. You can use the "progress" of the Christmas scene for the new 1990s scene and just scale it down by removing the grandparents and shuffling the rest of the family around into their normal pre-Christmas spots (rotating sets on the sides of the stage).
I can tell you now that Walt would not care for this version of CoP because it has turned into little more than a dusty old book up on the top shelf. I think all of us CoP fans would have no problem with the attraction being down for 6-9 months if we knew it was being cared for and updated to something that respected Walt's vision of progress and hope for the future through technology.

Re: Carousel of Progress in need of TLC!
I love the CoP. I remember my first trip to WDW and how excited my father was to show my sister and me one of the rides he remembered when he went in HS with his marching band. It hadn't changed at all. It would be nice to see a bit of an update though. CoP seems to be overlooked by a number of park guests and if nothing is done to fix it I am afraid one of Walt's dreams may end up falling into disrepair and replaced. That would be so sad
. I would be more than happy to hear that the ride is going to be down for a while and fixed...it would just make me eager to see what has changed. I mean how many time has POTC been down and changed?
