Very nice BIG! I'm glad you went with classic Pooh as I think they look much better in frames for a nursery. Did you use charcoal at all or just drawing pencils?

Thanks!NaCler wrote:Very nice BIG! I'm glad you went with classic Pooh as I think they look much better in frames for a nursery. Did you use charcoal at all or just drawing pencils?
I used drawing pencils...darker ones. I love drawing in pencil...can't stand paint...so that's part of the reason we went with framed drawings and not wall murals.
DW and I bought our DS-to-be a book containing the original Pooh stories by A. A. Milne...that also contained the classic artwork. I used those and a few others online as my guides. I'm used to working on sketch pad paper, but it was quite difficult drawing on canvas. I had a blast doing it though...and hope DS gets some artistic creativity from both DW and myself. I can draw and DW has a decorative eye.

Re: Creative Disney Crafting
This is my last semester before I graduate and I only had to take one class. So I filled the rest of my schedule with fun classes. One of those classes was intro to ceramics. This has been something I have always wanted to try. For our first project the assignment was to make something which met a need we had. My first thought was a Disney Vacation. So I decided to make Sorcerer Mickey's Hat! So keep in mind when you see these pictures this is my first attempt making something from clay, and no joke the instructor only gave us 5 minutes of instruction... seriously. So most of this was guess work!
This is my hat before getting fired and adding any glazes.

And this is after painting on some under glazes

This next stage was the weirdest/nerve racking part of the process. In order to give it a shiny finish you put this green stuff all over it and then put it back in the kiln. I was really nervous it wouldn't work and my hat would be forever green!

Here is the finished product! It worked and didn't stay green!!
For some reason it came out less blue then it went it, but I'm still learning!

the kiln colors you have to go DARRRRRRKKKKKEEERRR than you want when you use the glaze... darker than you think you should. (we have a ceramics store here that you paint the things and they fire them for you)
Re: Creative Disney Crafting
Yeah I have since learned I should do multiple coats of the glaze if I want it darker.dstrawn9889 wrote:the kiln colors you have to go DARRRRRRKKKKKEEERRR than you want when you use the glaze... darker than you think you should. Cute mills10 ~ a very good first effort. My Mom, F1gment, is the clay artist in our family but I've been lucky enough to tag along to a few of her classes. Yup, you got to slosh the glaze on really thick

Re: Creative Disney Crafting
The time has come to re-paint the old mailbox. My Dad built an awesome mailbox out of 1/4" plate steel many moons ago after he grew tired of the weekend, teenaged mailbox bashers. After he passed away, my Mom was open to a bit more colorful mailbox than white. So the last time it needed painting, I went all out and had all four parks represented as well as worked many of our favorite characters into the design. That creation was up for 10 years but it's had a few run-ins with the snow plow over the years. Those dings, coupled with the lovely snowy weather 9 months out of the year and blistering heat and humidity the other 9 months of the year (it's possible, the seasons overlap!) plus I recently found someone to weld the door back on (that fell off this past winter
) led to me having to primer coat that area. And now it is looking rougher than ever
Even with it's current state, the neighborhood children still love looking it over. In fact I saw a few little ones out there last night pointing at the different characters while they were waiting for their parents to finish their conversation...err, I mean their walk.
Anyhow....F1gment and I bought some paint today at Menards and now the battle begins. I offered up two designs (silly me) of Mickey Mouse and her beloved Figment. Guess which one she's rooting for
Of course that will be the tougher of the two to do...sigh. I'm still thinking of a way to smush the two designs together into some sort of cohesive design. Thoughts???

Re: Creative Disney Crafting
Did you buy more than one paint color?
Perhaps you could paint one side of the box with a Mickey design and the other side a Figment design. If getting the character of Figment on the box is an issue, maybe you could just draw in his eyes since that's the easiest part to draw, (drawing is my weakest point...) or maybe decoupage a picture of Figgy on there.
Sounds pretty cool though!
P.S. We <3 Menards

Re: Creative Disney Crafting
I limited us to Rustoleum colors since it sees so many different elements, so that is sort of why I was surprised they even had the right shade of F1gment purpleMmeLeota wrote:Did you buy more than one paint color?

So...we ended up with F1gment purple, a lighter pink for his belly, glossy black, glossy red, and glossy yellow (can double for Mickey's shoes or Figment's eyes) and a glossy clear. Those are the spray paint colors and then whatever I decide to do, I'll have to pick up some accent colors like orange for Figment's horns and nails. It helped that Menards was having a sale on the paint, $2.99/can and then a $1 rebate per can ~ up to 6 cans. Menards is definitely F1gment's store ~ not mine

theBIGyowski-- I love the drawings! My nursery was all-out Winnie the Pooh themed. I think the drawings are perfect for a baby, and something they can always cherish when they get older. I still have my Winnie balloon lamp from way back in the day.
mills10-- I love your Sorcerer's hat! It looks amazing! I've wanted to take up pottery for years, but all we have in this area are paint-pre-made-pottery type stores, and it's too expensive to buy the machines for personal use. Maybe someday! If you make anything else Disney, would love to see it!
Amy-- Your older mailbox sounds so amazing! I am with MmeLeota on this one, maybe try and put Mickey on one side and Figment on the other so you're both happy. Are you saving your old mailbox, or do you have to get rid of it? I bet that brought a lot of smiles to a lot of folks! (And on a side note, snow-filled for 9 months of the year? Goodness! I would not survive that. I can't stand the cold!

Nope, the mailbox is staying. My Dad built it to last! Just the paint job needs re-doing. We only had about 3 months of snow this year, followed by 90 degree days in MarchSorcererDonald16 wrote:...Amy-- Your older mailbox sounds so amazing! Thanks! That is one of my concerns with Figment as no one knows who he is. But I suppose that doesn't matter because we know who he iscousininmiami wrote:Amy I love your Mailbox ideas!!! How about Mickey giving Figment a piggy-back ride?
