I have it on VHS, not on DVD. I bought it from someone in the UK and they converted it from PAL to NTSC for me as part of my purchase. I like it. The quality is not very good, but it wasn't that expensive. I have seen that the site I got it from now does offer it in DVD format too. Always thought about buying it again. As a history student, I think that the movie should be released. However, I am aware that I am very much in the minority on that one. Some people out there would just not be happy with it, regardless of the fact that it is a work of FICTION. And yet, Roots was a project hailed and always discussed as wonderful project. I just don't see why people can't let it go. Use it as a discussion piece to explain to younger audiences why we don't have slavery anymore and move on. Hmpf.

PAL to NSTC usually comes out a bit fuzzy. There were/are VCR's that did the conversion, but the quality of the conversion was poor.

I found a full length version on youtube today and watched the first 30 minutes. I hope to manage the last hour in the next few days so I don't forget the story line and have to start all over again    I loved the Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah number :D It was funny to see the one part where the hummingbirds are humming, and why he says, "Where is that blue bird?"

I agree. I think it needs to be studied by film students at least. Although if society was more open-minded... :? :( And everyone LOVES Gone With the Wind, the portrayal of slavery in that wasn't exactly close to how it likely really was.

And don't forget Blazing Saddles. It doesn't get more racist than that but it is on tv every other day. I would also like to see Song of the South.

People overlook Blazing Saddles for two reasons - first, the more intellectual of the two reasons, is that it's a satire so few people took it seriously. second, it's funny, and people seem to think anything is ok as long as it's intended to be funny.

My uncle got a copy of Song of the South and burned it onto a DVD and gave it to me. I only watched it once because I kept forgetting I have it.

I don't remember most of it though I did think it was okay. I liked the Brer Rabbit stories though I don't remember much about the Tar Baby story either.

I FINALLY SAW SONG OF THE SOUTH!!!! It was really cute!!! I really, really do love those songs... it wouldn't have been offensive in the time period it was made in, although living in 2012 I did cringe a little at the Tar Baby bit... But I LOVED IT

The only two places I will ever need to be are Manhattan and Disney World.

Did that link work ok for you? It stopped playing at 1:10 for me :( Luckily I was able to find lots of options that had broken the movie down into parts and am finishing it now.

Weird, the link worked fine for me. That's seriously irritating.

It was strange. After Jenny fell into the mud it just wouldn't start up for anything. Like I said, I was able to find several options where they had broken down the movie in 10 minute segments so I just had to click through a few more things. At least I got to finish watching :D And I'm glad the link worked for you!

It just did that to me on my second watch-through, too. Grr

Charley and the Angel was just released a few months ago, great movie starring Fred MacMurray and many others. Try to see it if you can it's great! I am a big fan of the Disney movies from the 70's, Now you See Him Now You Don't, The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, Superdad, The Strongest Man in the World, Gus, The Barefoot Executive, The Ugly Dacshund, Snowball Express, The World's Greatest Athlete etc... and the list goes on!

I love them all and have them all, I think I own just about every Disney movie!! Some other totally random ones are Bon Voyage with Fred MacMurray from the 1950's, and Johnny Tremain from the early 1960's. Both of those are great movies well with the watch. I don't have Song of the South however and would love to see it again someday. :D
