Happy 40th!! It is a darn shame that they didn't do much of anything for Magic Kingdom's 40th. It consisted of: merchandise, more merchandise, small ceremony, and a few random extra fireworks during Wishes. Heck, even at Epcot we did a lot more for its 25th anniversary and Disney almost planned to not do anything that day.

It seems like Disney World will forever be in the shadows of the California parks.

I had the same thought! But I'm guessing since it specified "on this day", it's probably just wishful thinking...
I'm also willing to bet that they didn't last throughout the day as guests scurried around picking them all up to put on ebay. From what I heard the special day only merchandise was a unique pin and a shirt. The shirts were available for order during the weekend online at disenystore.com but the pin wasn't. The park sold out of the pins and shirts by early afternoon.

I'm hoping they'll go really big for the 50th.
Hope away, but it seemed like the 50th of DL slid by pretty much unnoticed :( I'll hope along with you though :D

I seem to remember quite the shindig for DL on 5/5/05!

Woo!!!! We went on the day of disneys 40th. OF COURSE we went to Magic Kingdom for the full Disney magic experience. We did get cute little
purple pins (for the scrapbooks!) They had a little ceremony with lots of speakers. A small firework show followed. Then almost EVERY Disney
charachter created came down the streets and shook everyones hand. That was about it, but it was still very cute. After that we sprinted to
Splash Mountain to try and beat the crowds.

Yes they did...and we were there! We were there on 7/17/05 as well. They had free golden Mickey ears and special park maps...along with free birthday cake cupcakes (I lost count how many we ate  ). Plus there were ceremonies on both occasions, and the obligatory merchandise of course. We weren't willing to wait in 4+ hour lines for some pins and suff that was only available on those particular days. Plus, at each remaining opening day attraction, there were gold painted ride vehicles for photo ops. (I wish we actually took advantage of those) The castle was regally dressed and they premiered a new parade and fireworks.
I thought it was quite a party anyway...
