Will it be mounted in such a fashion that you are able to easily remove it but that it is still attached securely? After all, you still need to install the lights, plus Mouseoholic will have to be able to install her goodies in it. I'm still anxiously awaiting to see what the lights look like!!

I'm not sure if duct tape counts for McGyver-ing. Everyone knows you can fix
anything with duct tape!

Haha... nice job M-Dude. You definitely don't want it lying on the ground as it may become a fancy cat bed!

Ohhh, I am so not good at being patient

I'm wondering if you will use the same sort of anchoring system my brother used for my Dad's world map. I'm not sure of all the particulars but I know the bottom has a locking bracket that keeps it snug to the wall, but allows you to unlock it and remove it when needed.
Meanwhile....we're waiting....patiently....waiting.....somewhat patiently....waiting....sort-a, kind-a patiently....waiting....waiting....
Haha! Oh, I bet M-dude would be really mad! As much as he loves his cats, I don't think he loves them that much to let them in the fancy-schmancy Mickey shadow box

Especially not when it took decades, errrr, months to build

No, no!! M-DUDE is going to hand blow cold cathode lights to the shape of the display and then build a system of rotating gases so the lights change color as you look at the display!!

ARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHH...!!!!!! I almost had this entire post ready to go, and then my stupid cat jumped on the keyboard and deleted the whole thing so I had to start over...!!!! GRRRRRRR!!!!!
So anyway, here we go:
Mousekedude Builds a Shadowbox... Episode 14: Let's mount this puppy...!!!
Greetings, Mousecrafting fans!!! As I mentioned earlier, I decided to go ahead and mount this thing on the wall, seeing as how it doesn't make any sense to leave it lying around where it will just get in the way and become a cat bed or something equally useless...
So anyway, like I said, I couldn't find any decent mounting brackets that I liked, so I decided to "McGyver" some myself. I started out with some aluminum angle stock, making two halves of a complete assembly: part of it attaching to the box, and the other half attaching to the wall... with alignment pins holding the whole thing together in place. So here we see a couple pics of the process where I make the two halves of the bracket assembly:
Next I have to drill the holes for the alignment pegs and install them. I'm using sheetrock screws for the pegs, so I have to grind them into a usable shape once they're installed. Here's the whole process:
By the way, you'll notice that I'm holding the nozzle of the vacuum cleaner near the spots where I'm cutting and drilling... I'm not crazy enough to make a total mess of Mouseoholic's pad when I'm working inside...
And here's what the completed two-piece bracket assembly looks like:
Now I mount the "top half" of the bracket assembly to the box.
I also made a "kicker bracket" that installs on the bottom of the shadowbox to keep it spaced out evenly from the wall.
Now, in order to mount the box to the wall properly, I need to mark the proper location of the mounting bracket on the surface of the wall. How do I do that, you ask? Well, I simply nail-in some temporary "marking pins" on the back of the shadowbox to mark the ends of the bracket. I'll hold the box in place and press the pins against the wall to mark where the other half of the bracket needs to be placed. Here's the "marking pins"...
Okay, now we're ready to mount this puppy! Before we do, here's a shot of what the space looks like right now, just as a reminder....
So I moved a bunch of stuff out of the way, and now I need to hold the box in place and press the "marking pins" into the sheetrock to mark the correct location of the other half of the bracket assembly.
That having been done, I now place the wall bracket in the right location, mark the holes for the anchors, drill those, and screw the wall bracket into the anchors.
Alrighty, then!! I've now hung the shadowbox on the bracket! It's all set! I can easily lift it off when I'm ready to install the lights, so "no problemo" there... Here's a shot of it in place with a bunch of the paraphernalia reinstalled around it... and a few pieces temporarily placed inside it... to give you a preview of what it will look like when it's all finished.
The final episodes will be all about installing the lights and Mouseoholic loading it up with her pins and stuff! I hope it's not too long before that happens... Meanwhile, I thank you for your kind attention, and hope that this whole thing has been entertaining and inspiring!
