Re: Theme VS Thrill
Universal doesn't seem to have any trouble theming really good thrill rides!! The Mummy and Spiderman just to name a couple.

I believe that Disney can make the "off-the-shelf" rides work with the proper attention to detail and themeing...Future Guy wrote:I strongly believe that the experiences at Disney parks should be available only at Disney parks. Thrills can be gotten anywhere, but Disney's themeing is what sets it apart.
I have mixed feelings about Disney buying off-the-shelf coasters and marketing them as "magical" new Disney attractions. They did a good job with Rockin' Roller Coaster, building a story and a theme around it, but overall I prefer the days when Disney invented their own ride systems.

Remember that Disney Imagineers invented the tubular steel roller coaster when they created the Matterhorn Bobsleds at DLR. So...every tubular steel roller coaster in the world is a descendant of the Matterhorn...a Disney attraction.

Disney has really ruined us as far as other theme parks go. We find ourselves saying-"Disney would never do this" or "Disney would never allow that." so our days at other theme parks are over.

Disney is at their best when they lead the way and don't follow in others foot steps. I honestly feel that if Disney follows then we will not be ableFuture Guy wrote:I strongly believe that the experiences at Disney parks should be available only at Disney parks. I actually live within 30 minutes of Six Flags in NJ and have only been there twice in my thirteen years living here. I just can't handle how there is all thrill and no theme to everything at the park.rphillips14 wrote:Disney has really ruined us as far as other theme parks go. Re: Theme VS Thrill
Ah, I remember Great Adventure. I last went there after our high school prom, about 20 years ago. I couldn't tell you what rides we went on, none of them were very memorable. I was never big on thrill rides either, although that is changing since my 7 year old seems to like them (it started when he took me on Splash Mountain 3 years ago). I think Great Adventure was the big reason I was always kind of scared of thrill rides. We went on the pirate ship ride when I was around 5 and was kind of freaked out by it. Nowadays I wouldn't have any problem with it, again since my 7 year old is fearless about these things. We went on the Air Force 1 ride at the fair last year, which is probably the most intense ride I've been on. Fun!Len90 wrote:I actually live within 30 minutes of Six Flags in NJ and have only been there twice in my thirteen years living here. I honestly see six flags and Disney as two entities. They both have attractions but to me are categorized on different levels. Disney is a theme park as things should be tied to different themes. Six Flags is an amusement park and should offer amusements and thrills. I for one can't handle an amusement park as there is nothing to it. You can't get lost in the story and feel like you are experiencing something unique. That to me is why I have not been back to six flags in at least ten years and don't have plans to go back.

I agree. Six Flags is not Disney. They never will be and I don't think they intend to be.

Re: Theme VS Thrill
When I go to Six Flags in Atlanta or to Lake Winnipesaukee here in Chattanooga I don't think Disney. They aren't and will never be Disney, but they do both have their place. I grew up in Coney Island and enjoy getting the Cr@p scared out of me every once in a while. Although with Six Flags it's not the type of ride that really scares you, it is the type of maintenance!!

Re: Theme VS Thrill
I think Six Flags does offer entertainment, just like going to the movies or a concert is a form of entertainment. Everyone needs entertainment and a diversity of it. And while Disney is entertainment too, I consider Disney more of a "family vacation destination" as well. A theme park delivers entertainment + more.

Re: Theme VS Thrill
The sad part is that some people would never consider a Disney trip because they don't enjoy six flags. If they don't enjoy an amusement park they see Disney in that same category. I have talked to many many people who would never go to Disney for that is reason. "I don't enjoy rides" is usually the main excuse. Those people are much harder to convince than people who think it is too expensive.
