Will the lap bars create an issue for someone who may need a little more legroom or that little bit of extra space to get in and out of the log? Of course, I have never been on WDW's version either.
By all accounts, there's now more room because they got rid of the large dashboard (if you are unaware of how the MK logs look, a Google search should explain the dashboards). The way the lapbar works should not at all impact leg room and almost anyone who fit before should still fit. Some guests from WDW Magic who were concerned said they had no trouble, as all they want is for the lap bar to come down until it clicks, and the first "clicking in to place" position is not very far down.
So, from the looks of things, there is almost no impact on the ability to ride.
Thanks for the insight!

What's funny, is that Space Mountain at DL has double seat cars, not single file. How is Space Mountain in WDW now?

I think it's still the same single file with bars.
I am guessing the reason they don't ditch the seat belts on matterhorn is because that counts as a good faith attempt at security.

This exact thing made me laugh the first time I went to Disneyland. It was strange to me that my Space Mountain car was like Splash, and my Splash car was like Space Mountain.

There was really no difference and I still was able to enjoy the big drop even with the "constraints" of a lap bar. I think it was needed...tho however I felt like there was a few times we still stopped and we heard "brer bear and brer fox are causing some kind of commotion downstream" quite a few times but that might have been from people not pushing their lap bars down?
You can also get that recording if they're backed up in the loading/unloading zone. Maybe it takes more time to do so because of the lap bars?
They might need to adjust the timing of dispatching the logs just a wee bit maybe?
Most likely. A lot of people have said "it doesn't affect the time at all!" But people who actually work attractions know that just a second or two is a tangible affect on dispatch times. While it's clear from what we know so far that these aren't much of a set back, as they're not even checking them, they are going to add at least a second or two to dispatch times, and they'll have to adjust how many logs they put on the ride accordingly.
I'm sure they knew that, but it may require more of an adjustment than they expected.

mindflipper wrote:Thanks, I thought I was remembering it correctly. Be honest, it doesn't look like DLR can't take the WDW logs - it's not wide enough! Nor does it look like they have to room to add any lap bars without removing 1 of the 5 seats.
Yeah, DL's logs are significantly less comfortable. Also, there's less to the attraction itself. I believe one fewer drop (technically two, but the last drop on MK Splash doesn't count), and a quick YouTube video confirms that unless I'm missing one. Also less fancy show scenes. And then the logs.
It's not quite the difference from DL's Pirates down to our Pirates, but Splash is one of the attractions WDW got the better version of.
Heavens, I didn't mean to triple post. Sorry about that.

So, are the big pads at the top of the logs gone now that the lap bars have been installed? I thought I saw a photo somewhere of the logs with the lap bars installed but now I can't find it...

Did the DLR Space Mountain go double-seated after the rebuild that was done for the 50th, or was it double before that rebuild?
I don't think DLR Splash Mtn can go double. It didn't seem wide enough. I think when they built WDW later they built that change in their Splash Mtn.

We've had double seats since at least 1996, but it sounds like we've had side by side cars for Space Mountain since the start.

I'm pretty sure DL Space Mountain has always had the double seats. That way you can scream right into someone's ear, instead of just behind their head

Looking at one of my old books, "Disneyland: The First Quarter Century", I can see from the photos that DLR's Space Mtn. did indeed open with double-seating cars. Then why? WHY? What idiot decided to build WDW's years later with the single row cars?!? If WDW had double-seating cars like DLR, the lines would be shorter and there would be no need for silly interactive queue lines. Would it not be better to spend the money at WDW to upgrade SM to double-seating instead of putting in those stupid interactive queue garbage?

Maybe they thought the single-seat was more rocket-like?!

Maybe if they ever rebuild from bottom up WDW Space Mtn like they did DLR Space Mtn. then they could convert to the two-seat rockets like DLR. Then, WDW Space Mtn. and Splash Mtn. would have the same type of seating. Uniform Standardization. Yeh, that's what we need here.

Wait... what? I thought DLR's version was opened in 77 and WDW was in 75?

You're correct; WDW opened Space Mountain on January 15, 1975 and DLR on May 27, 1977. 1977 still puts in the first-quarter century for Disneyland (1955-1980).
