Future Guy wrote:Animal Kingdom is an unfinished park. And because it's unfinished, TDO can't afford to take down Everest or Dinosaur for maintenance and rehabs because of the serious capacity issues that would cause. Disney obviously doesn't feel that Animal Kingdom is worth spending money on, and until they change their mind I don't see why it's worth it for me to spend my money there, either.
I agree. This is one of those chicken-and-egg scenarios. AK doesn't have enough, so we don't go and spend money. Because it doesn't make enough money, TDO doesn't want to expand it. Because TDO doesn't want to expand it, we don't go and spend money. Etc, etc, etc. So, someone has to blink first...and in this case it is going to have to be TDO. Fan's aren't going to support a park that isn't finished, and we aren't going to be happy with the small selection of rides/attractions, especially rides that need maintenance. Your point is dead right. They can't take down the rides they have, because there isn't enough to fill capacity. At least EPCOT had Horizons still available when UoE and WoM went down for their major conversions in the 90s. Additionally, AK needs a classic-style dark ride. An omnimover, something relaxing that has large capacity. Dinosaur is cool, but definitely not relaxing.

I really want to really like AK, but like many others, it is my 4th choice of parks I visit, and if I have to leave one out during my trip, it is AK...

Well, there's Everest (which is an E-ticket, even though the Yeti doesn't work) Kali River Rapids, which is too short, but good on a hot day, Maharajah Jungle Trek (beautifully themed, but basically a walk-through zoo exhibit) and Chester & Hester's Dino-Rama (which everybody hates). And that's all. Meanwhile, the park's only dark ride, Dinosaur, has had so many effects deactivated (a pure cost-cutting measure, BTW) that it's basically just a loud bouncy ride through the dark with the occasional strobe light flashed in your face.
Ok...I thought I was going crazy when the Carnotaurus did not chase our vehicle like it did in the past!

Carnotaurus constantly chases, unless it is broken or being refurbed (many times in the past 5 years).

I noticed on my last trip (Aug-Sept 2010) that he did not chase us...and I rode it 3 times. They must have had that feature turned off during my trip.

They don't turn the chasing Carnotaur off. He was more than likely broken. As for the pterodactyl and the "jumping" dinosaurs above you that move(d) from left to right are a different story.

just did a quick search to see if what I saw was true...and there is in fact a "stand-in" Carnotaurus head that is used when the chasing one is down

Too high to be the chasing Carno. Looks more like the one where they take the photo at the end. But yes, they do use that when the chasing Carno is out for a refurb.

Check out Martin Smith's excellent Dinosaur Ultimate Tribute video for a complete accounting of the effects that have been deactivated since the ride debuted in 1998 (link)

I love AK and it has great technology, but it needs a little more love from the Imagineers. Between the Yeti and the carnitaurus, it's very disappointing going to AK these days. I had to convince the kids that the carnitaurus actually used to run. They didn't remember it.

There is space within Animal Kingdom, the actual park itself has a lot of room to expand within it borders. A new land would be fabulous especially if it opened with a awesome E-ticket attraction.

Nice. AK needs something. I can't believe that the last time we were there we easily rode EE 6 times, and it wasn't even off-season. That's lack of attendance speaking loudly.

Interesting article, sounds like a lot of rumors and simple speculation, but you never know
