Well, I used to like that movie...now I see images of Duffy...thanks... :?
(for the record, I have not been to the bar either....not my scene  )

I think back to Jessica Rabbitt, "I'm not bad; I'm just drawn that way..."

Poor Duffy is catching a wave of hatred from the way the marketing machine has pushed it. It's just a stuffed toy.

...that happens to be butt ugly and useless. Just a cynical attempt to create another money-making fad. Remember Beanie-babies? How about Cabbage Patch Dolls? The Pet Rock? The list goes on and on, and I hate to see Disney jumping on that band wagon. Any character they introduce should have a connection to something Disney... either in some traditional way with the classics, or in connection with some popular new Disney or Pixar movie. It's bad enough that they have to even do that (think: themed gift shops at the end of every ride), but to create some new character out of thin air, slap some hidden Mickeys on it, and call it "Disney" just to sell toys is especially low. I don't know.... it probably wouldn't bother me as much if it was just there, kinda subtle, "if you notice it then fine but if you don't, oh well"... but this relentless in-your-face marketing and fanfare is what makes the intent blatantly obvious to me, and I don't like it.

You aren't saying that about the vinylmation. You sound pretty adamant about your dislike for those. ;)

To be fair, Duffy was around for awhile before he was named, he started out as just a Disney bear with Mickey Mouse footprints ~ or so it seems...

Caught me, dude! I was playing the Devil's Advocate in this thread - I wondering when you noticed a bit of you rubbed off on me..

But frankly, I don't care one way or the other about the bear. To me, the vinylmation is a far worse money-grubbing marketing plan to profit from a fad...and far uglier...

That's where we differ. I think the vinylmations have more DISNEY about them than Duffy. They are in the shape of Disney's icon, Mickey. And MOST of the stuff that is on them relates to parks, resorts, restaurants or characters produced by Disney artists. Duffy is a teddy bear that they found at FAO Swartz and slapped "Hidden Mickeys" all over it and are pushing it everywhere they can. I don't think vinylmation has been forced into the public's eye as much as Duffy has. Except by me posting them all the time! :D

I like SOME of the vinylmations, but definitely not all of them. The ones that have nothing to do with characters, etc... (see list above), I loathe as much as that bear. But there are some really good vinylmations. NOTHING about that bear is good.

Well said, bro. Although I don't much like the vinylmations, I will concede that they're more "Disney-esque" than that fuzzy piece of...... fluff.

Not quite ready to go that far... but I will say that the R2-D2 is not quite as revolting as the rest of them.... I can resist the gag reflex a little easier on that one. My stomach still churns a little, but the worst of the bile usually settles fairly quickly. With counseling and strong enough meds, I could probably learn not to be so horrified by that one in particular... and with several RSDW's under my belt, I could probably even tolerate being in a gift shop that has it on display... but only till the ambience wears off.....

Aw, come on...you have to admit the back story they came up with is cute!!!
I agree that it's the marketing of Duffy that has turned me against it. I'm glad that Duffy has been a hit in Japan for a while now, but the Japanese culture is different than the American culture. What works there won't necessarily work here and vice versa.

Big difference between vinylmation and Duffy: do you see them selling a $600 Duffy??? No, but they do with vinylmation (check that thread). Sorry, that makes vinylmation a worse scam ever compared to Duffy!

Hold on there bud... Give the Disney Execs some time and some credit. You know it will only be a matter of time before they start selling Limited Edition Bear Who Must Not Be Named. I am pretty sure that those will go for a pretty penny.

Plus, the VM's that go for $600 are limited editions by Disney artists. They are just like the animation cells that are sold in the Parks and at DTD. They are meant to be collected and displayed, not traded like pins.

Luckily, if they did come out with Limited Edition Bear Who Must Not Be Named, J.K. Rowling would sue them (and win) for infringement on her Harry Potter books because Voldemort is oft referred to as "He Who Must Not Be Named." And don't think it can happen. Look how long it took Apple and the Beatles to resolve their differences over a friggin icon LOL!

Bear who must not be named...hahaha

The bear is kinda cute, but to me is just a teddy bear. At least the vinylmation figures are Mickey shaped. I don't like all of them, but some are cool. I just wish you could see which one you were buying beforehand...that's what turns me off to the whole idea. If I knew which figure I was going to get, I'd be more likely to buy a few. But without knowing, I refuse to spend my hard earned money on a "chance".
