In the true tradition of all things "Mickey", it will be painted black. Of course, the other reason for it being painted black is because that way the pins and trinkets will really stand out in the strip-lighting I plan to install. Remember, there will be a black velvet background, so everything mounted on it will really "pop", visually. Can't wait! :D

Did you ever find that LED strip lighting and buy it? And if you have, how do you like it?

I found it online, but I haven't bought any yet. Mindflipper's right: that's going to be another chapter later... in fact it will be the next-to-last chapter, since installing the light strips will be the last thing I do to the box, right before mounting it on the wall and putting all the pins in it.

The Mousekecouple create Mayhem Marauders Gift Boxes

Hey, there, Mousecrafting enthusiasts! As hinted at in previous posts here and on other threads, we created some really cool gift boxes for our fellow Subbers who will be joining us for mayhem on December 4th. First, a little background: so many of you have made such a good impression on us over the last couple of years that we feel almost like family. So in planning our December Mayhem Marauders meet-up, we wanted to do something special. As many of you know, it started off with making buttons for the official Dole Whip meet-up on the Poly beach. But as we planned the events for that day, and things naturally started to take on a life of their own, we realized that so many of you were wanting to make a full day of it. So we decided to book a dinner at 'Ohana for about 10 of us (the number we felt reasonably sure were committed to spending most of the day together), as well as a few other meet-up events that would all culminate in the big bash on the beach to watch Wishes with Rum-spiked Dole Whips. So to make all of that really special, we decided to make complete gift boxes with all kinds of goodies that would be appropriate for the day's events, for all those who let us know that they would definitely be participating in the whole shebang. Some, such as MadEye and his girlfriend, have said that they would like to pop in for at least the Dole Whips on the beach, but can't make the rest of the day's events. So for them we are making meet-up buttons. Others, such as MmeLeota and Chernabog40 can't make it to any of the events but would like to be there in spirit. So for them we are making life-size cardboard cutouts of their heads with their pictures on them, and we will carry them with us for many of the day's events and pose them with us for pictures. That will be really cool! So with all that having been said, here's the run-down on the making of the gift boxes. By the way, this whole process took a couple of weeks to complete. As you can see by the stuff in the background of the first few pictures, the work on the shadowbox was ongoing at the time, and we were squeezing in work on the gift boxes here and there as we could find the time. So anyway, let's get to it.

We started off by buying raw, unfinished wooden treasure chests, which we then proceeded to stain and lacquer.

The next step involves gathering all the gold dust and other little ornaments that will become part of the interior of the boxes, placing it all in the boxes, and mixing and pouring the casting resin onto everything.

Next we create the labels for the inside of the lids by printing the graphics onto color paper, trimming-burning-antiquing them, and then gluing them into the insides of the lids and epoxying them into place.

Then, with the boxes themselves all finished, we gather up the rest of the goodies and put the packages together.

All done, and they're boxed up and sent out in the mail! Next stop: Mayhem!!! Woo hoo!!

We certainly hope you've enjoyed this episode of "Creative Disney Crafting", and we assure you that we will return to our regularly scheduled program of "Mousekedude Builds a Shadowbox" just as soon as we can get him off his lazy posterior to work on it. Meanwhile, to those who will be joining us on December 4th: "See ya real soon!"

Well, I finally got to participate in some Disney crafting! Usually M-dude does this on a day when I am not home. We had so much fun putting these together. I know we will have even more fun when we get to meet all those joining us in a few weeks.

Although we made these for adults, this is something you could also do with your kids. Possibly even plan a treasure hunt at one of the resorts. We did a treasure hunt in MK on our last visit and it was so much fun. The boxes could be used to mark the occasion and give your kids a place to store their treasures accumulated during their trip. It could be simple things like printed napkins, coins, stir sticks, stickers and autographs etc. There are plenty of things that once can do on a budget to get kids involved and excited without spending tons of $$$. If I were a kid again I could see it being fun packing your treasure chest at the end of the day with little goodies accumlated along the way.
