Here is my take on why Reagan ended up #1. They mentioned during the show that until the next-to-final show, Lincoln and Washington were head-to-head for the top slot. After the next-to-last show, Reagan received a lot more votes pushing him to #1. I believe this happened as a direct result of the next-to-last show. That show took the form of a debate where each candidate had someone arguing on their behalf. Each candidate also had a fair number of people in the audience to support them. Everytime the Reagan debater was speaking, people from the King camp were booing. I think the response was a direct result of the peole who were offended by the booing. We will never know for sure, but that is my take.

If Ronald Reagan were still alive, he would not have won. It has nothing to do with anything other than the Discovery Channel's target advertising demos and the profile of the average person who gets interested in these kinds of polls...

i.e., mildly-conservative to conservative in nature, and between 30 and 50... people who sure as hell knew Ronnie Ray-Gun.

I'm not so sure I buy that. If that were the case, I do not think King would have ended up in the top 5. Maybe.

Although I greatly respect Ronald Reagan, and would rank him among our greatest presidents (I believe the greatest of the 20th century), I don't consider him the greatest American. I would have to give the nod to Lincoln, with Washington a close second.

I have my own theory as to why Reagan came in #1. Sadly  , I think it is due to to the lack of historical knowledge among so many Americans. They could not watch TV during the week of Reagan's funeral without seeing and hearing the many tributes and accounts of his many accomplishments. However, they would have to put in a little effort to learn what Washington, Lincoln, etc. did to shape this nation.

If you don't accept that theory, maybe it's because he was one of the hosts at Disneyland's opening day.

Your right I have noticed in schools they have been pushed to show all kids black history and its sad to say but I have noticed history about white people have been extremely limited they teach the basics but when they dedicate a month just to black history and not focus on history in general there is a problem. Now don't get me wrong I see nothing with teaching kids that all people helped this great nation without everything that has happened over the 200+ years I would change a darn thing.
Some may say oh the slaves well it is my opinion that with out this tragic action America would be nothing like it is now. I do say those who have been screwed the most have been the Indians forced to move into the desert and live in the worst communities I have ever seen. Now that they have money for themselves coming in the reservations are starting to get bigger and more like a standard urban community next to any city

To me the greatest American is Rosa Parks, because she symbolizes great american concepts : freedom, equality, resistance, strength, independency,... She was Martin Luther King's inspiration. Besides, she's black and a woman. And for those reasons, she deserves to be the greatest. :)

My vote: Lincoln. His vision of equality, and forbearance after the war. No modern president begins to compare. MLK is right up there also, IMHO.

Reagan?!? Could you imagine an attraction, "Great Moments with Mr. Reagan?"
No, no... He's got a point.
