Amy, try actually shopping at the Man Zone Toy Store... who knows? You might meet a handsome airline pilot buying a tool and be able to sweet talk him into flying you to WDW for free in December!
That would be awesome! And I have shopped there before ~ I have bought 2 or 3 Disney-fied keys, and a few tomato cages ~ those don't work very well, the tomatoes keep escaping anyhow :(

That only becomes a problem if those are your only tools in the collection!

Fortunately I have others....

I'm making another trip to the Man Zone Toy Store tomorrow (by the way, I am the one who made that up.... not Jacca) so I can work on another episode of my epic project. Can't wait! :D

Mousekedude builds a shadowbox...... Episode 2
Part 1: Buying more materials (this episode will be in two posts due to the number of pictures)

Greetings, Mousecrafting fans!

We join our hero in his usual "day-off morning breakfast hangout..."

*munch, munch, chomp, slurp* (urrrp... 'scuse me...) *chomp, slobber, gulp*

"Oh, are we on...?!" (sits up straight, wipes mouth with napkin)...
"Okay, folks, today is the day I make the molds to form up the sides of the shadow box. There are two possible methods for forming the sides: either steaming and bending hardwood planks, or laminating/gluing and bending thin strips of veneer... I've chosen to do the laminating because for one thing, the radius of the ears is probably just too tight to bend solid wood, and for another thing, there's really no sense in buying all the stuff to build a steambox that I'll probably never use again after this project. But either way, I need to get materials to make the molds, so......"
(chair scraping, standing up) "..... it's off to.... you guessed it: The Man Zone Toy Store!!" (scurries out)

Arriving at the Man Zone Toy Store....
Image

"Ahhhhh.... (sniiiiffffff.....) the intoxicating aroma of fresh lumber and tool oil...."
Image

To build good molds, you need clean straight lumber... "Ah, here's a good one..."
Image

Load it up, move 'em out!
Image

Stay tuned for the second part in the next post......
:goofy:

Mousekedude builds a shadow box...... Episode 2
Part 2: building the molds.

"Okay, I'm back in my garage, materials unloaded. Time to get started."
A little Subsonic Radio to set the mood, and we're off and running....

Image

First I trace an outline onto the mold material, using the pattern I made in the last episode, then I start cutting out and assembling the molds.
You'll note two things: 1) The molds have to be done in sections. It's impossible to form up all the sides all the way around at the same time. So I'm making a mold for each ear, and then two more for the top and bottom of the head. 2) When cutting the outline, I have to actually make two cuts, to allow for the thickness of the side materials when they get laminated and sandwiched into the molds.

...and voila! The finished molds!

In the next episode, I'll start making the veneer strips and laminating them together, then forming them up with the molds.
Stay tuned (don't know when it'll be, but it'll be some time....)

I don't know about you, but the suspense is killing me!
