mickey's backyard bbq question

Post by nicklesm17 » Jun Wed 09, 2010 5:48 am

Has anyone done this at Fort Wilderness? Any highlites, negatives, or tips you could offer? We have (at time of travel) a 3 1/2 year old and 1 1/2 year old. is it good for them? My wife is pushing pretty hard to go back to WDW this year instead of the DL trip I was planning, so this may come into play.

My family and I went to MBYBBQ back in 2006 and decided then that we would never go again. At that time our children were 7 & 4. The food was was nothing more than ok....fatty ribs, cold hot hot dogs and hamburgers. It was basically an open dance hall with a live band. There was no real one on one time with the characters. The dance floor was jam packed and there was alot of pushing an line cutting as my children waited patiently for character autographs.

The event was ok, but we just did not feel that it was worth the price of admission. We prefer regular character meals and the Hoop-Dee-Doo Review these days. Hope this helps, but remember, this was my only experience with MBYBBQ....

I've been to Hoop-Dee twice. the 2nd time to see if it had gotten any better than the first (a long time ago). So your comparison doesn't encourage me. This is a 2 dining credit meal. Kind of expensive. Well, unless anyone else has a positive response, I guess I better play it safe, and check back on this one in a couple WDW trips down the road. Thanks for taking the time to tell me about your experience.

I've never eaten there but what I have heard so far is mixed. Most people seem to think the food is ok, but probably not worth 2 dining credits. I know they pared down the menu and reduced the prices since they first opened but it still sounds a little expensive for what you get and the entertainment you see there.

We were there Christmas night 2008. The menu (probably different from other times of the year) consisted of: Smoked Turkey, yams, vegetable, salad, rolls, stuffing, squash, cranberries, green bean casserole. It cost 2 meals (as stated) or $44.99 per person. Also included was free beer and wine. The food was good but... . Afterward they had ice cream bars/Popsicles.

There was the country band that was really good and got you up to learn a line-dance (as well as regular dancing). Also a professional lasso twirler (lassoist?) that was pretty amazing. There were numerous characters that the kids will love (if not scared at that age). Mickey, Minnie, Donald (don't remember if Daisy was there), Goofy and Chip N Dale. Even had the Country Bears.

If you're going to be there (WDW) a while or get to visit there often, then I say yes, check it out. It is a lot of fun and a change from the parks and other resorts. If your stay is limited, then maybe skip it. As far as being good for the 1½ and 3½ year old... eh... probably not. Especially for 2 meal credits. For a sure bet on characters, you can't go wrong with Chef Mickey's (Contemporary).

thanks for the description. i didn't know they had that many characters, that's a plus. for the kids, it's all about the charcters. value-wise, well in the past several years we've always gotten the free dining plan. we have trouble using it up. that's why we experiment and do stuff like this. i originally thought free dining was kind of a waste. we just don't eat enough to make it worth our while, but now, it has forced us to try stuff that we never would have even known about otherwise. some have become a regular part of every trip now, while others...i'm glad it was "free", beacause i won't be making that mistake again. well, this is one positive review anyway. i'd like to hear from anyone else about which characters are there during their regular schedule, not the holiday. thanks again for your help.
