Exclusive Look at Space Mountain

Post by subsonic » Jul Tue 05, 2005 11:11 am

A friend of mine visited Disneyland and Space Mountain was having a Soft Opening.

He's got a short review, some pictures, and videos up.

I still can't believe that I, having a great love for Space Mountain and Disneyland, haven't been on this. In fact, I haven't been since the real 50th. I haven't seen the new fireworks either. Weekends have been busy as well as I don't want to deal with the crowds.

Now that is just sad! My wife and I flew down from Sacramento for one night just to see the fireworks back in early May.

My friend just got back from Disneyland and was telling me all about space mountain. He made it sound that the beginning and the ending of the ride was really cool. He also mentioned the vandalism in the queue. That's soo horrible.

Oh, and "Welcome Home."

He said that people have been tearing off part of the material on the wall, and that one of the exit signs was kicked in.

Sub went to Disneyland tonight. I'm looking forward to hearing his thoughts on the Space Mountain improvements.

Depending on how late he went, I am sure fast passes were gone and the standby line was long. I wonder if he made it on.

I was just there at Disneyland and Space Mountain has been having a lot of down times. Hope Sub made it on! I want to hear what he says too.

Dang that line goes on and on! Even around 11:40pm the wait time read '95' minutes. But that's to be expected.

My girlfriend, parents, brother, his gf and I are all going to DL in about 3 and a half weeks... I figure we'll FP Space Mountain in the morning, then avoid it like the plague unless crowds are waaaay down following the Labor Day weekend.

I showed up around 5:30 on Friday. Fast Passes were gone and the wait said 110 minutes. We were meeting more friends. They didn't show up until 8:30ish. We all planned on eating dinner together. The place was packed, we waiting around 30-45 minutes at the French Market to get clam chowder. Ugh.

By the time we headed over to Space Mountain the fireworks were going off. This made the trek difficult. We got to Space just before the fireworks ended. The wait time said 105 minutes. It took us 2 hours to get onto the attraction.

Now, onto my impressions...
Queue:
The queue looked more high tech.:D They took the fly-by out. The station looked more high tech as well. It's the same ship but with more detail and a new front. The status screen was a big upgrade, now it's full projection.:D I was expecting more effects and details in the station. I read, "Guests will feel like they are in a space station in orbit with stars revolving around them". They only did this effect with the status screen. I was hoping for more screens on the sides that simply had stars revolving around.
Ride:
They added a special assistance transer table to the load area. Incredibly, they loaded us onto the rocket in that area. I got to experience this first hand. Basically you load into a rocket off to the side and then it slides onto the main track. After dealing with loading slow guests when I worked there this must be a god send for the crew.:D Sitting in the rocket there's constant audio of humming/rumbling. It's a subtle addition that makes it feel like your in a space craft.:D The launch (going up the lifts) had great new effects and the lifts are faster/quieter.:D Upon entering the mountain the first thing I noticed was that it was DARK.:D I read that the mountain didn't have any external light and it shows. I'm sure part of it was due to them blacking out the fly-by. All you could see were the stars.
The ride is exactly the same path as before. The only difference is that it's smoother and just slightly faster.:D
The landing had a wonderful effect as well. It's quite disorienting.

The new Space Mountain did not meet my expectations. I think they were set high when it came to new effects. I wanted a lot more, "Woah, this looks amazing.. how did they do that? I really feel like I'm in outer space". This feeling mostly applies to the queue. They could have done a lot more with the station. The ride is the same. I like that. What it boils down to, is that Space Mountain IS better than before and I will continue to ride it for many more years to come.

I do miss seeing the Famous Amos Cookie But that is a small price to pay. I love Space mountain and am so glad that it is back. I cant wait until they Change to the night show. They are keeping that in their back pocket and revealing it when the lines start to die down (like that ever happens)

:D
