New White Rhino for AK

Post by Len90 » Jan Tue 26, 2010 12:06 am

Earlier this month, Kendi (11), the first white rhino to be born at Disney's Animal Kingdom gave birth to a new female white rhino. That is the eighth white rhino to be born in WDW in the parks 11 years. A very special occasion given that the species is currently endangered and at one time almost extinct.

I personally am hoping to go back to Disney this summer and will be on the look out for the new baby rhino. Congrats to everybody at AK for such a successful program.

Wow, that is truly amazing. I had no idea that was even in the works! We'll have to look for it on our next trip.

This has nothing to do with the Rhino....but on our last trip, when we went diving in the Seas, there was a Stingray that was expecting pups any day! I would love to know if she had them, how many etc.....that was the only ray that was NOT debarbed, they did not want to stress her out!

I am sorry but I can't find anything about that. However, I also dug up that in early November a Gerenuk Calf was born at the AK. It is an African antelope and is the 28th to be born at the park.

Also, back in October two more male giraffes were born at AK (total of 14 giraffes bred and born at DAK) along with 2 gorillas, 2 black rhinos, and numerous birds.

Sounds like the AK is getting crowded.

Well, when you're an animal in a cage, all you can do is eat, sleep, excrete, walk around the cage - and if you're lucky, some fun time with the opposite sex. It's not like they get the internet and HD cable TV in those cages.

LOL Mindflipper, but a lot of this is actually more like a planned breeding. Disney's Animal Kingdom is part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and takes part in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Population Management Plan. The giraffes at Disney are bred through this program as well as the Gerenuk Calf and numerous other species roaming the savanna. There was no mention to this plan with the White Rhino.
