Hey guy/gals,

We have a few days left. I promise to post the next day's activities tomorrow morning. This was by far the longest trip yet (11 days total). This report thing has been fun. We have never done a trip report. It is nice because it is like reliving your trip again. We have laughed and reminisced over the many memories we made on this trip that I think if we had not written this report, we would have forgotten about.

Stay tuned for more.......

Day 8, Tuesday December 15, 2009
Narrative by Mouseoholic

For the first time on any trip to WDW we decided on this trip to have an off-site day. This turned out to be one of the best ideas yet. Everyone needs to escape princesses and pixie dust and do a little sight-seeing. On another site I frequent, we asked for suggestions on where to visit. One of the many recommendations we received was to visit the town of St. Augustine. Everyone in our family loves visiting historical sites, so this was right up our alley. St. Augustine is the oldest continually-occupied European settlement in North America. It was founded in the 16th century (1565 to be exact) by Pedro Menendez for King Philip II of Spain.

This trip was filled with firsts: our first time going off-site, and the first time renting a car while at WDW. Let me say that if you ever feel intimidated and overwhelmed about renting a car for a day during your trip, don’t be. Alamo makes it easy. There is a Car Care Center on site, and they have this down to a science. We booked our car on-line. The week before I called to confirm the reservation and get more information on how we get to and from the hotel to rent our car. The night before, I called and scheduled our pick-up. Alamo arrived on time and took me to the Customer Car Care Center located in the Magic Kingdom parking lot. Before you knew it I was already on the road back to my resort to pick up the family.

The goal was to drive to the Contemporary to eat at Chef Mickey’s for breakfast, then head out to St. Augustine. Well, we were all so exhausted that we missed our reservation. Not only that, but Michael had suffered a relapse and was very sick. He had to stay at the resort and rest. So as it turned out, the rest of us did not get on the road until 9:00 a.m. I am sad we had to miss breakfast at Chef Mickey’s. We will just have to save this for another trip.

Anyway, we got on the road and headed to St. Augustine. We decided to take a short stop at Daytona since it was on the way and see Dayton Beach. It was very foggy that day, and the fog did not clear off until around 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. In fact, when we got to the marina just before you cross the bridge to the beach, you could not see a thing. By this time we were ready for lunch. We found a local seafood restaurant and had a little gator and shrimp. It was tasty!

We did not get to St. Augustine until 3:00 p.m. We happened to park near the visitor’s center, so we went in to see what they suggested we do first. The lady suggested that we take the trolley since it is the off-season and everything shuts down at 5:00 p.m., so that would be the best way to see the town. She mapped out for us the best sites to see and where to get on/off. We paid $17 per person and hopped on the next trolley. The ride was a bit bumpy….ok, VERY BUMPY!!! I would suggest using the “Sightseeing Trainsâ€

OMG! You were in my neck of the woods, so to speak! I got family in St. Augustine - one could have been your tour guide on the trolley LOL!

You may need to check with Flagler College about tours. They had tighten up the security sometime ago and don't allow visitors to just randomly and casually walk around (the V-Tech incident some time ago changed alot of colleges to eliminate some lax security). They may have escorted tours, but you would need to find out when they are and if you need to sign up ahead of time. I tried to look around there myself one time, and was quickly intercepted by their security!

Many of the large buildings downtown in St. Augustine had been along time ago in the early 20th century large, grand hotels back when railroads stopped in Jacksonville/St. Augustine. Once the lines extended to Miami, North Florida tourism dropped sharply and the large grand hotels went out of business. In St. Augustine, one eventually became the Lightner Museum and another Ripley's. I believe the same is true with Flagler College (previously a grand hotel), but I can't remember its history specifically. In Jacksonville, one of those grand hotels became May Department Stores, and after it went out of business it then was renovated into its current City Hall building.

And Mouseoholic, like you, I want my steak well-done. I have never apologized to the chef.

That's a great tip Mouseoholic! I always order my steak well-done too...and I've never thought of it that way. I might have to start following in your footsteps on that one!

As for the continuation of the trip report, WOW! From the pics from the dessert party to the pics of St. Augustine, it's all so beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing so many details...even the bad ones (it takes courage to do that). It shows that we all have our little issues that arise...even on vacation.

Mindflipper and MmeLeota AT LAST, I HAVE FOUND FRIENDS AMONG STEAK!!!!!!!!! I have never met anyone who shares my passion for well done steak.

We plan on going to St. Augustine again on our next trip in November/December. We should meet up for a drink. It would be fun to put a face with avatar.lol

We really do laugh about the whole melt down incident. It seems no trip is complete without one. Since we never, ever argue (seriously), it is funny to us when we do (after the fact of course). I wanted to start a thread on the subject but have not had time. If people are willing I think it would be funny to read about the melt downs others have had at WDW. We are all human and we know it happens. Sharing is like therapy.

P.S. Great tips mindflipper on Flagler College. I really wanted to go in but time did not allow us. I will make sure to remember to check and see if it is even possible and what time slots are available.

Michael was sick that day so we will surely go back. There was so much to do and see.

AT LAST, I HAVE FOUND FRIENDS AMONG STEAK!!!!!!!!!
Well done does not have to be shoe leather! I have had some marvelous well done steaks. I am right there with ya sister! :D (I don't know about you, but I cannot stand the texture (and taste for that matter) of "raw" meat. I don't like my cow mooing at me as I cut into it)

Wow, St. Augustine! My old hometown! My mom's side of the family has been there since my great-grandparents' marriage in 1914. We moved away in 1988; I'd love to live there again someday.

If you ever feel up to it, you really should go over to the island and go to the top of the lighthouse. There's no elevator, you'll have to climb the stairs, but the view is worth it!

As far as steak goes...it depends on the cut of meat and how good the chef is. If it is a top cut of meat and I know how well the chef can cook...I don't mind going for medium-rare. It's not about it being bloody or whatever. A good steak tastes better when it is rare and loses taste the more you cook it. A lot of people prefer the tough, marinated taste and also like to dip it in steak sauce. I personally do not...because I like the taste of steak...and don't want to treat it like a hamburger.

But...to each their own.

Reading these excellent trip reports really does make me feel like I was the one who went to WDW! I can only hope that my fiance and I are able to go their for our honeymoon so I can write a report on it.

Good point about the lighthouse, Future Guy, and if Mousekecouple wanted to switch out steak for fried shrimp, they could head over to O'Steens over on the island too. Family run and long-lines for decades, but great food & affordable price are hard to beat!
