Correct, Len! And in order for Disney to control RCID, Disney must be the only permanent resident of RCID; that way, Disney being the only resident is the only registered voter in RCID as well - giving it 100% control over the RCID. That is the reason why Celebrations is not built on RCID property but property acquired that is adjacent to the RCID - residents there are registered voters in Orange County/Orlando, not RCID. This has been covered in 60 minutes on TV on more than once ocassion.

Very interesting! So Disney set up everything so they could have complete control of all the property..... actually I don't see anything wrong with that. Good way to protect their property and keep things magical. I always wondered why the surrounding areas were always so perfectly maintained. Now I know.

BTW it's Reedy Creek, not Reddy Creek. Forgot to fix the spelling.

Actually, don't give Disney the sole credit. The State of Florida literally bent over backwards to make this deal with Disney. They wanted the tourism business it would bring, and therefore had created a one-of-a-kind muncipality that exists no where else in Florida. It has many of the benefits of being a municipality, including its own building codes & inspectors as well as being able to issue tax-exempt bonds like any other city for capital programs such as infrastructure, drainage, and utilities.

I thought RCID did have a few permanent residence and a mayor? I thought it was one of the legalities.

No mayor, a board of supervisors.

I found this on Wikipedia:

A five-member Board of Supervisors governs the District, elected by the landowners of the District. These members, senior employees of The Walt Disney Company, each own undeveloped five-acre (20,235 m²) lots of land within the District, the only land in the District not technically controlled by Disney or used for public road purposes. The only residents of the District, also Disney employees or their immediate family members, live in two small communities, one in each city. In the 2000 census, Bay Lake had 23 residents, all in the community on the north shore of Bay Lake, and Lake Buena Vista had 16 residents, all in the community about a mile north of Downtown Disney. These residents elect the officials of the cities, but since they don't actually own any land, they don't have any power in electing the District Board of Supervisors.

However, it's Wikipedia, and given how many times people have posted inaccurate info on it, I have no way to verify its accuracy.

Yep you are correct and caught me on that one. I knew I shouldn't be hanging around the computer lab on the board 10 minutes before class.

For anybody that would like to read anything more on the RCID check out their website at: http://www.rcid.org/AboutUS_main.cfm

Every few years 60 minutes and other new shoes do a new story on RCID and usually put a very negative spin on it. "Disney has its own government and do whatever it wants unchecked and without any controls" - that kind of stuff. Insinuate its sinister and corrupt and can abuse the system, like with the tax-exempt bond financing.

Jacca, I'm brave but not that brave! I am hoping that I win the WDW nut contest with that shopping trip last night/early this morning.

You know you're a WDW nut when.....

You spend most of Black Friday only looking for WDW related items! Haha, I walked away with a EPCOT soundtrack (don't know how I found it) A few WDW shirts, and other stuff.
