Umm - I have to say that is not futuristic [ok, the tv maybe] and kind of ugly. What is the theming here? This is like what you can find at other hotels, just fancier. I liked the wacky colors! No where else could you find those... I hope they took a survey with teh new one before diving into the whole project [oh wait - they don't do that stuff, they'd rather wonder why everyone hates it when it opens]

The theming is contemporary just as the hotel name suggests.G2-4T wrote:Umm - I have to say that is not futuristic [ok, the tv maybe] and kind of ugly. What is the theming here? Comtemporary- characteristic of the present; "contemporary trends in design". I would assume this "model" might be changed or modified before all 1,007 rooms are altered.

It looks very New York/Manhattan to me. I stayed at the Time hotel a few months ago and that room at the Contemporary could double for the one we had. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but it's not very unique. All the same, I think the old rooms did need some sort of refresher.
I agree with Disneynut about the contemporary theming, but I think G2-4T is right in that most people think of that resort as "futuristic." Unfortunately, as the Imagineers found with Tomorrowland, keeping things futuristic is almost impossible. Heck, keeping things "contemporary" is enough of a challenge!

Here is more info I found about the Contemporary & Poly makeover.
The guestrooms of two classic Walt Disney World resort hotels are getting an extreme makeover.
Rooms at Disney's Contemporary Resort and Disney's Polynesian Resort, which both opened along with Magic Kingdom in 1971, are being given a dramatic new look with new décor, furniture, carpeting, lighting and bathroom fixtures.
Disney's Contemporary Resort will receive the more dramatic changes. Décor of the rooms will be changed from its current style (taken from the bold, bright colors of Contemporary Art Masters of the '50s and '60s) to a more upscale, elegant design that incorporates muted color accents -- reds, greens and yellows -- with basic black and white.
Rooms at Disney's Polynesian Resort will also get a new look, but retain the "South Seas Islands" style that has been the Polynesian's hallmark since 1971. Dark, hand-carved wood furniture contrasts with tropical blues, greens and browns in bedspreads, paintings and wall coverings. Both resorts will receive upgraded furniture elements such as flat-screen televisions and designer bedding.
In addition to the room renovation, décor in the hallways and public areas of the two resorts will also be updated.
The renovation of the rooms at Disney's Polynesian Resort will take about one year, with the rooms at the Contemporary Resort taking about six months longer. Each resort will be renovated in phases, with a small number of rooms being renovated during each phase.

Contemporary
I always thought that the Contemporary resort was the coolest hotle at WDW. The new rooms are pretty cool looking. I was lucky enough to stay there once in 1982. I dig the fact that the monorail goes through the hotel.
and I love riding the monorail thru the hotel and lookinig down into Chef Mickey's and the gift shops, etc. I have never stayed in any of the tower rooms, but that would be cool to see the Magic Kingdom every night from your room. That makes me wonder if the lights on Main Street stay on all night long.

Nope - the lights do turn off sometime in the night, same with the Tomorrowland ones. Kind of strange to just see a few basic lights when we're so used to the flashy color and light!jkm8113 wrote: That makes me wonder if the lights on Main Street stay on all night long.

Yeah, at night Main Street is lit by large spots that extend from the roofs of the buildings. They don't throw much light into some areas, so if painting or other detail work is being done the third shift cast members bring in some portable lighting arrays. Without the show lighting, background music, or crowds, Main Street is a pretty eerie place at night.G2-4T wrote:Nope - the lights do turn off sometime in the night, same with the Tomorrowland ones.
