I agree so much there. They really should do something like this.IMFearless wrote:Here's how I would do it: release the film on DVD, but start it out with someone (probably Bob Iger) looking at the camera.
"Hi, I'm Bob Iger, President of the Disney company. What you are about to watch is ..."
And he then goes into a little bit about how the world was different back then, how people were offended, how no offense was meant, and how today's world knows the issue. Maybe just five minutes at the front to explain it, then show the movie. It makes sense to me.

I couldn't agree more. You can't hide from history. Besides if you watch the movie, uncle Remus is the smartest one in the movie. I have a pretty big collection of banned cartoons. Most are banned for racial reasons, some for violence, and some for both. Most of the cartoons I have are Disney. During WWII Disney went to war and attack every aspect of the Japanese, German, and Italian (to a lesser extant) culture. These cartoons if taken out of text are racial hatred (remember we were in a war of annihilation).disneydreamer58 wrote:I am not gonna even touch this subject because I have some very strong opinions that don't need to be expressed here on this site about this topicso I will just say.....You can't ignore or erase history and all the bad things that happened, you can only learn from it (education is always the key to righting wrongs) and try not to repeat them.
I haven't seen the movie in years and years. I wouldn't mind seeing it again. I liked Uncle Remus, he was sweet and had a softness about him and was a great story teller.
Interesting information on this film at www.songofthesouth.net
That said, they are history. You have to view Song of the South, these cartoons, and so many other things as historic archives. Except for may be the "Happy Slave" part, Song portrays American history. If we hide from history we give people a chance to denie it and increase our chances of repeating past mistakes.

Okay, I just watched Song of the South and I really don't see what the big deal is. I have seen far more offensive movies on TCM without any kind of disclaimer. And if you want to talk about offensive, just watch the special features on the DVD copy I watched. They had Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs, that is soooooo much more offensive than anything in Song of the South. Not only does it offend African Americans, but little people and the Japanese too.

Being a big fan of history I'm another who thinks this movie should be re-released. It just needs to be shown in context and not something people take and sensationalize. I have never seen this movie but in clips, however I have read a lot of the research from many of the sites and I would be greatly interested in seeing the whole thing.
I'm also one that has a lot of banned cartoons from war eras, my husband is a history major so we're geeks LOL!!! Although most of mine are of Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes Characters. And as Jacca pointed out...highly offensive to certain races today if you don't put it into perspective and realize when and why these cartoons were made.

I also have a lot of Bugs Bunny and Tex Avery just to mention a few. It seems Merry Melodies produce a whole bunch also. One of my DS teachers uses them as a teaching aid when they study racism in America.jenjolt wrote:Being a big fan of history I'm another who thinks this movie should be re-released. Bob Iger is a known liberal (which whatever..im not trying to make this political)..but unless he feels the company can make more than it will lose over ridiculous lawsuits (and lost support in the political arena)...he will probably never release the movie while he is in charge of the company. Which is a real shame in my opinion!

Given the age of political correctness, this film will never get released by Disney. The film iteself may or may not be offensive, that truely depends upon each viewer to decide. However, there will be those with film unseen who will attack it just to be able to protest. Its the nature of politics. Disney has tried to find ways around the political turmoil, but as long as someone is willing to protest it in the media, Disney will not touch it.

Where did you find the movie for a download? I've found it online but only at sites where you have to sit and watch it right there and then. I would like to be able to download it and watch on my own time - I've been spoiled by VCRs and DVRs!!agingerbugg wrote:I found a copy of the movie online, I haven't watched it yet, but I did download it. I will watch it tonight, and let everyone know if it is so offensive that its banning was justified.

The movie is not any more offensive than the portrayal of Prissy in Gone With the Wind. What I DID find offensive in the file I downloaded was the Disney short, Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs.

I finally saw it and I like it. It really puts "Splash Mountain" together.

That to me is the biggest joke.....Disney won't re-release Song Of The South, but one of the most popular rides in the MK is based on it. Will someone please explain W*F is up with that?MetalRage wrote:I finally saw it and I like it. It really puts "Splash Mountain" together.
