Pet traveling experiences...good?bad?great?

One of our dogs met Pluto, which was surely the most incredibly special thing he experienced on his trip to WDW. We were leaving the kennels at Animal Kingdom and Pluto was just coming out from the back...and our Angus had his picture taken with a very kind, thoughtful Pluto, nose to nose.

It got me wondering about other pet families traveling, boarding, etc.

I do remember seeing a little beagle "in training" at the Magic Kingdom. He was wonderfully well behaved, wearing his little "training" jacket and tolerating people coming up to him to ooh, aah, and pet him.

And we had Noble with us in Downtown Disney early one morning, when they still tolerated doggies, and a gentleman and his son from Canada saw him and stopped to tell us how much they missed their dogs at home and Nobi got a lot of loving. It was a happy moment.

So, any pet traveling stories to share?

Hmmm, not exactly a pet traveling story but I heard a while ago that Disney was going to move forward w/ a pet resort sometime soon.

I always board my dog at Pet Paradise in Sanford (just west of Orlando) b/c I don't like the Disney kennels...I would be psyched if they updated the facilities to be more of a doggie resort than a kennel.

Mindflipper: the WDW kennels also take cats.

WDW Kennels

The issue is what to do with them at night. I would love to take my two dogs down to WDW with us, but the logistics become an issue.

If you stay on Property the only place I know of is Camp Wilderness, so you would have to own/or rent an RV

Off property you could check rental homes and hotels. More hotels are starting to allow pets, including large chains like Hilton, etc

Pet Vacation Homes

There are also borders you could use as well

I would love to take my cat with me everywhere, she is a little person inside a cat costume, I just know she is

If they ever had a resort where the pets could stay without being at the kennels on property, that'd be great!

Our only story was that - back in the 90s - our dog ended up getting kennel cough from the Disney World kennels even though he'd been pre-vaccinated for that.

Her name is Precious and she is just that...LOL
If she was a better traveler I would take her with me but she HATES being in the carrier and I don't like to stress her out

I have always hired a pet sitter or had a friend take care of her. She is spoiled and I know it...ha ha ha

We take our dogs with us and stay at, I don't know if we are allowed to mention something commercial, but here goes, we stay at the Residence Inn Lake Buena Vista. They charge a ONE time fee of $100 for the length of the stay and ask that when you are not in the room you keep the pups locked up, ie, in a travel housies.

We do this because we want them with us when we are back in the room resting, avoiding the hottest part of the day, and at night. The pups LOVE it, the property is close to the parks, but you would need a car...which I guess you would have it you were traveling with your pets.

Highly recommended.
I think the other ResInn properties take pets also but are not as close to the park.

I don't have a pet story, but we love taking our cats when we travel. The one disappointment we have with Disney is that there is no place to stay where your pets can stay with you. They have never been in a kennel and never will, so Disney is out for them. Of course, we think that they would love the Animal Kingdom, but with no pet resorts there probably won't be an extra magic pet hours for the parks any time soon either. I think that would go over very well, pet day at Disney.

I would feel bad leaving my dog cooped up in the kennels all day. I do like it when I walk from the MK parking lot to the TTC and I see owners exercising their dogs out on the front lawn. They all look so happy.

That's true! However, at Universal Studios, the hotels there have certain rooms set aside that will take pets. They require all pets to be up to date on vaccinations and some other requirements - but it does give you a place to stay that will take pets.

Travelin with my dog and my friends was great. What I didnt like at all was I think I had mine boarded at TTC at MK. The dogs coundnt go outside to potty. We had to always go to let them out. So if they had to go and they couldnt hold it than they would go in there kennel. Which that is gross:( They weret given enough water. Every time no matter what time of day it was the dogs bowls were always empty. I had to bring it to the managers attention and to plz put 2 bowls of water. I borded 2 dogs together. One weighs 7pds and the other 30pds. They need alot of water. I wish they could stay in the room with us. Now I leave my dog at a kennel at home in MD and there runs are huge and the dogs are able to go outside to potty and get fresh air by themselves. The dogs are very well taken care of than they were at Disney. I dont recommend boardin at Disney. The dogs couldnt go outside for fresh air or to run unless I went to let them out

Thanks there are probably others too, but we like to stay in the World. I have heard that you can bring pets to the Fort Wilderness Campground, but I don't know for sure and haven't researched it.

Sorry, couldn't help myself. Seemed like a loaded question to me...

I would love to be able to take our cats with us. It is always such a hassle to get a pet sitter and all, and I know they miss us when we're gone, but man, the thought of trying to get those rascals to sit in pet carriers for hours on end to make the trip is just too much. No way. That, and there's no cats allowed in all the good resorts we like to stay at, so.... oh well....
