Will there ever be an "on demand" section

Post by DAR » Aug Wed 05, 2009 6:13 pm

I know we have the requests if a song is available but what I wanted to listen to say one of the Jack Wagner monorail spiels. But instead of having to wait until it was available I could just bring it up whenever I wanted. Or maybe somebody didn't like the song I picked or what was playing on scheduled stream, they could pick a song of their liking.

I don't know if it would ever work but it's an idea.

I think the problem with this is you'd need hundreds of individual streams. We're already fortunate for the donated space SR has. Plus I think On Demand kind of goes against the idea of a radio station; you can't flip on the car and listen to exactly the songs you want, when you want (at least not on the radio)- and you may request a song, but usually it's hours (and in reality due to FCC rules about programming apparently days) before your song gets played.

I know I'd love to be able to listen to the tracks I want, when I want- but I just plan it out in my day :mickey3:

Yeah, I think this would be asking too much of the Web site. I can't imagine all the technology (server streams) that would need to available for this type of set up. Personally I have not encountered many times that I could not get a song in the que, of course, I do listen all day long at work (and at night working from home).

Again for me personally, I love the site exactly the way it is and am grateful for all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes for us to hear this amazing FREE music :mickey:

im fine with the request and scheduled stations. I would think if we had an "on demand" station then we wouldnt really need a request station. Or we could have a subscription area where you pay afew bucks for on demand. the money could go to make subsonic bigger

Hmm where to start.

Its a good question to whether there will be an an on demand section. Currently subsonicradio is more of a community based system, where the interaction of others requesting the tracks, enriches the listening experience. On on demand system would push the site more towards an indivialistic site. Its technally feasible, as we would just have a jukebox setup, rather then a live streaming setup. I just don't know if thats what we want subsonicradio to be.

As for charging, subsonicradio will be free as long as we can maintain the servers, site, and streams thru private donations, it has never been our goal to make money off the site. We have been very lucky to have several individuals donate time and resources at crucial times to keep SR up and running.
