Epcot had those lights all last year too whenever it was busy (food/wine and holidays) I like the darkness of World Showcase but when it was busy, the lighting defnitely helped.
I know this is probably your first flight...and it's mine too...ha, ha

I was there for NYE 2001 going into 2002 and I can definitely tell you it was the last time for that. Keep in mind this is shortly after 9/11 too...so things like security are still a bit green. We decided to eat an early lunch at the Studios and would then head over to the MK for the rest of the day and to watch the fireworks there. Well...a CM came around to us while we were eating at 11:00 AM and told us not to leave the parks because if we did we wouldn't be allowed back in. They reached capacity by 11:00 AM that morning! So we just stayed there and enjoyed the Studios and the fireworks at midnight. It was a fun trip...but not worth it in my opinion with the resorts being double to triple in price and the lines being the same. Now I go a few weeks later...when it's cheaper...and less folks!

I was at the Magic Kingdom on Christmas day in 1994. They closed the ticket offices at 11am. We heard that there was about 100k people in the park. But, back then, if you were staying on property they would allow you to enter or re-enter the park. I hear that now even if you're staying on property, you can not get in once it's closed. Even though it was crowded that Christmas day, I don't remember one incident of any rudeness or any situation that was disagreable. We stood in line with the extremely long lines and watched the Christmas parade with elbow to elbow crowds and everyone was smiling and having a good time. A very different attitude from the stories I often hear these days.
