Virgin Megastore

Post by MadEye » Dec Sat 27, 2008 9:41 pm

So I read on another site that there is a RUMOR that Virgin Megastore at DTD, will be closing in early 09. Personally, I hope not. Great place to get music and DVDs and a video game or two.

Anyway, it is still just a RUMOR for now. Until I see it closed with my own eyes, I won't believe it. But if it does go, what would you want to see put in it's place. That bit of real estate is HUGE!!!!

Wow that is very shocking. We always go there when on vacation since Virgin usually has some really interesting imports that you can't find elsewhere.

Haven't most of the Virgin Megastores around the US closed? I know the one in NYC is supposed to close so who knows if this one is going to as well.

Maybe that's where the rumor came from. I hope it doesn't close because I love browsing through all of the CDs that they have when we go.

Virgin Megastore is (as I find) overpriced. I get all my music online, as do most people nowadays. even "imports" can be found online. about the only thing I would get are movies, but even then, I get them from Netflix and just copy them.

so basically, VM closing doesn't bother me too much. I know they take up a large chuck of real estate, which may be hard to fill. I wonder what they'd get to fill that in...

I've never been to the one in Downtown, we have one in Chicago, are they really that different from eachother?! I don't remember the last time I bought a CD.

VM closing doesn't bother me, but I feel badly for all of you that did enjoy going there. You can always make a journey to Chicago, there's one on Mich. Ave. :)

With all the problems with the economy, you've got to believe that many mall-type stores that sell overpriced merchandise will fold. How will this affect Downtown Disney? I wonder if we'll see a rash of store closings there.

@JS There is something for me that is important about music. Yes you can buy it online...but Since I enjoy A LOT about music (my family too)...A completely legal album without is cd is just...a sad thing... I rather pay a little extra and get the CD.

Audio of a CD is by far more precise. When you got a really good sound equipment...of course I am lucky to have one fair enough to hear and appreciate the difference.

Back to the subject...problem with those mega store is that they have so many things in inventory that they lost A LOT of cash to stolen, lost, broken etc stuff.... also they must generate massive cash input to be half profitable...

Also, I do not think that the quality of the shopping and the enjoyment of buying something is present in those giga thing...most of the workers are not passionate about music...Where I usually go in my hometown ...I can talk for up to one hour about music before buying my album...The guy that run this shop is a wiz and is very friendly with all his customers.

Zavvi the rebrand of the Virgin Megastore in the UK has gone into administration so the rumours are probably very sadly true. A sign of the times :o

Although, I always visit the store when I go, I rarely find anything of interest to buy. About five years ago, I visited the Virgin Megastore in Miami and was sadly disappointed. The store was almost empty, the racks were about ten feet apart and the corners were empty.

There was a rumor about this a while back (though I'm not sure it had a date attached to it). It may have been on MiceAge... can't remember. I do remember that part of the rumor was they'd be putting an Apple store in there; which would be like, the hyoooogest Apple store ever.

Back in the day, I really liked going in VM but the past few times it's been really lacking. So at least it fits in with the rest of DTD. >_>

I know the original one on Sunset Boulevard in LA closed not too long ago and that was a shame. They should have kept it since it was the original one.

I have to agree with many of you. I love going into this store. It's almost like the Disney Emporium store. The biggest of its kind and with the atmosphere i can just walk around looking at stuff and be happy. Including all the books upstairs.

That being said very rarely did I EVER buy anything from there because it was WAY overpriced. I feel it was just a matter of time before it caught up with them especially because of the economy.

But it IS a staple of DTD and I hate to see it go. But what should take it's place? It's a huge store. That's a lot of room to be put in there. I'd almost say that a giant toy store would be awesome, but Disney already has one. Maybe take a small portion of Virgin and turn it into a mega movie store. With movies playing on small screens upstairs. Or maybe a giant book store like a Barnes and Nobles. That would be a nice ying and yang to the theater right next door. But the real question is, what kind of store would really fit in with the DTD theme?
